I have heard that there is a world class fossil bed in shallow water off Calvert Cliffs in the Solomon area. I presume that means off of Calvert Cliffs state park.
I am thinking about going down there over the 4th of July weekend (yeah, I know, but it is all I have available to me).
First, are the nettles there in force by early July?
Second, does anyone have any experience with the Holiday Inn Select marina?
Third, is there a ramp in the area that I could use if I decide to trail down and, if so, is there parking for the trailer?
Fourth, is there another marina that would be better (realizing that we would probably stay at the Holiday Inn so their marina would be the most convenient).
Location: Went South for the Winter..aint coming back......

Re: Calvert Cliffs
There sure is, I take the wife there every year, we usually haul back pounds of fossilized shark teeth, most of them are small (less than an 1") but we have some large ones too.
We usually hike/wade out to the cliff face from one of the several parking areas that are on the main road to the park.
We never ran into the nettles in June. I am no to sure about July.
Always a great trip...

Many thanks, Mardi Gras. Given that you haven't had nettle troubles in June, July 1st through 4th shouldn't be too difficult.
It was my plan to try to get there by boat and anchor off to go fossiling. Does that sound feasible?
Ted, I am no expert but I'll try and answer some of your questions.
1. Don't know anything about the nettles that time of year. I would assume it can vary from year to year. I would guess that they might be there but not necessarily in force.
2. Don't know much about the Holiday Inn other than they seem to have decent slips. I have usually stayed at the Comfort Inn in Solomons. They have slips as well. I launch the boat right around the corner at Solomons Island boat ramp. There is plenty of parking there and you can leave the trailer there as well. You would probably have to get there early in the weekend of the 4th. Say Thursday or very early Friday morning. It's open around the clock. Parking will be at a premium or you could launch the boat and have someone drive your vehicle and trailer back to the Holiday Inn while you drive the boat around to the slip. Will take you about 10 minutes from the boat ramp as you go up and around the back side of Solmons Island. Take a right out of the ramp then follow the markers up and then around to the right once again and back down.
There are no other ramps around that I am aware of but other than parking, you won't need one. I would again just make sure that you get there early. By the way, you should be able to anchor up just off of the Calvert Cliffs North of the Nuclear Plant and wade or swim in. You didn't mention what kind of a boat you have but with outboards you should be able to get pretty close and just wade in. Have fun. Jim.
I've stayed at the HI before. Nothing fancy, but nice enough and convenient to town (a fair walk, but not bad). You have to make separate reservations with the dockmaster for the boat. They have a big pool area with bar and probably a bikini contest or similar for a holiday weekend.

Thanks, Gary. I have signed up for a slip at the marina and a suite at the HI (the admiral likes comfort ). It probably won't surprise you to hear that the wife is coming down by car (See, it's not you ) The good side to that is that we have a support vehicle for shore trips etc.

Jim,
Many thanks. That is all very useful information. While I expect to run the boat down on her own bottom, if the weather is bad, the information on the ramp may be useful. The detail on where to go off of Calvert Cliffs is useful too... Since I have an outboard, I should be able to anchor in pretty close.
We have also gone fossil hunting this site several times. Make sure you go during low tide since at high tide the fossil will be covered by the water. Some good place to go are scientist cliff, plumes point, brownies beach, and breezy point. The areas north of motoaka cottages( The ones I listed) are older fossil layers which mean the better teeth.
If you are getting out of your boat and searching the beaches you should make a sifter http://groups.msn.com/eastcoastfossi...ingscreen.msnw
and bring a shovel. Also some ziplock bags and a back pack are also very useful. Im not sure if scientist cliffs is where the nuclear power plant is ,but I know the nuclear power plant is closed if you walk on it, but I am not sure if it is closed if you boat to it. Supposeably the nuclear power plant site is one of the best. The best places are always the places that are private to walk on( i think plumes point) but are accessable by boat. These places are usually not hit hard by many people like areas such as matoaka cottages and state parks.
This is area is also a good stiper spot ( not sure about exact spots). not sure if it is that time of the year though.

I live in Calvert have gone down there with my kids a bunch .Go at low tide. A word of caution please lock your trailer up do not leave it at the solomons ramp over night you may not have tires when you get back if you do chain up everything. Hate to write this but it's the truth.

Actually, I am coming down by boat. However, I do appreciate the warning should I decide to trailer down in the future. It's sad that such a warning is necessary...
