Default Solomons Island Report

Hi All,
I've just found your forum and I'm so glad I did. Ive just really started fishing the Bay. Grew up fishing the delaware coast / bay /indian river inlet. Anyway, I fished out of Solomons Island on Sunday. Had a great day but only caught Croaker. Caught at least 50, but only kept the biggest ones. Still had 21 nice ones of 16 - 18 inches. Was fishing peelers/bloodworms/squid. First hit was on the first cast, before it hit bottom on the peeler. Just drifted the Chinese Mudd area. No flounder when drifting between bouy 76 and 74, even though I talked to some folks that said they had limited out the day before, but I also cound not fine a bait shop selling minnows, so I was just drifting Fluke rigs with squid (minus the minnow).

Can anyone give me some good (BASIC) pointer for catching Rock there this time of year. I am a REEL Rookine for rock (Never caught one). I really want to get my kids into them!

Thanks!!!

Welcome to the board. This is a great site. I think you will find it very entertaining and filled with info about boating and fishing. Dont be afraid to post and ask questions or share knowledge you have. It is funded by contributers so that the info you are getting is by fellow boaters as well as industry people and the content is not sensored to benefit sponsors. That doesnt mean that cause you read it here it is true, the content is just not influenced by advertising. I think you will find it to be addictive and a good resource.

I fished out of Chesapeake Beach yesterday and we did very well on rockfish-- ended up with the limit although largest was only 29". We trolled just north of Cliffs with tandem rigs on the bottom. The top bait was a small spoon with bucktail with shad on the bottom. Each line had a 16oz or 20oz ball to get the lines to the bottom. For more info about local fishing check out: http://www.tidal_fish.com (take out the underscore) It is a local fishing board that gives some better reports. While this is the best boating board on the planet, the other board is more local fishing. Good luck!

This time of the year look for the fish schooling on top. Try the "hollow" which is just south of Ceader Point. It holds lots of fish. You can troll (try Pet Spoons) or cast (spoons, plugs, shad, etc...). For trolling - 30 ft of 50lb leader with an inline sinker. Vary your weights & lenght of line - 2oz 150yds, 4oz 125yds, 8oz 100yds, 16oz 75yds, and speed (slow). Try trolling east to west (you cover more of the water collum that way). Always have a casting rod ready for the top water action. Check your lines every 15 - 20 mins (jelly fish & grass can really slow progress). You may think about tracking the tides, moon, depth, lure, speed, etc.. in a log. You'll see patterns in a very short time if you do. Get an early start (before the weekenders scatter the fish). Hope that helps...
