Default Need recommendation!!

Let me tell ya a little of whats happened at this point! I have a new boat(less than 5 hours on it) First launch the strake rolled over the roller and popped a hole in it(air void). Took it to a dealer in Norfolk who sells this boat and is to be repaired under warranty. The service manager called me yesterday and said it was done. Drove an hour and a half and it was fillled, but not sanded or gel coated yet. manager was not happy as well as me. He told me to come back in 4 houirs and it would be done.

When I returned in 4 hours I looked at the work and it looked like shit! Found the manager and he concurred and said that it was a new boat and should be repaired as such. He appologized and asked if I can come back next week. My question to him was, Is the glass tech. compitant enough to do it right? I am having reservations on their capabilities on glas repair. My question is: Who is a top notch glass repair company in Norfolk? Even if I have to pay out of pocket, I want it like new!!!!! Thanks for any input.

Call Sea Hunt tell Joel what happened. From what I hear he will let you take it to (Bay Fiberglass) or any other place and pick up the tab.

Yea, I have been in close contact with him on this whole ordeal since the strake popped. I bought the boat in PA and live here in Va. Joel told me I could take it wherever I wanted, so I figured I would take it to a Sea Hunt dealer close by and looks like it may had been a bad choice.

We will see come next week. If its not to my satisfaction I will be taking it to someone who can get it right the first time.

Thanks for the input guys.

Call Davis Boat Works on Rt. 1 in Ashland (about 20mi. north of Richmond).

At one time I know they did warranty and other FG work for the Grady dealer here in Richmond. They fixed a couple of "voids" on my Scout (about 7-8 years ago, under warranty) and did a GREAT job!

Call Butch or Carole at Southeastern Marine (Richmond - 804-226-1111) FIRST and ask if Davis still does that work for them and how they feel about them. You can tell them that "Bruce with the Scout" sent you - GREAT folks - I bought my Scout from Carole.

Davis's # is (804)798-5155. They have been at that location for a LONG time! It's about 2-3mi. north of Ashland and about a mile or so off I-95.

Ask Joel about it and he can probably have Davis invoice HIM - no $'s out of your pocket!

Good luck with whoEVER you use, but take it to a GOOD place - there are a LOT of "jacklegs" out there that THINK they can do FG work!

I DO trust the "Mud Runner" recommendation - just thought Davis (and probably some others) may be closer.

You may try Jett's to see if they have a recommendation, too - may be closer?

P.S. - You SHOULD "expose" the dealer in Norfolk for screwing up the job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Regards,

Thanks for the info Bruce.

As far as exposing the dealer, if they dont get it right this time! I will sling all over the web.

In the start of the post, I stated that the dealer carries this type of boat and my sig shows I have a Sea Hunt. There is only one dealer in Norfolk that carries Sea Hunts..............

I had glass/gelcoat repaired before I took receipt of a brokered boat.
The previous owner obviously didn't pull the anchor all the way up the windlass and it smacked the keel causing 8 chunks to bust off.
After the repairs, I can't even see where the repairs were done.

The work was done at:
Lynnhaven Marine
2150 W Great Neck Rd, Virginia Beach, VA‎ - (757) 481-0700‎

I have used Tynes Fiberglass in Norfolk on two occasions. Their work has been very good and haven't had the need for any call backs.

Here is the latest!!!!!!!

Had a call from the dealer's sevice manager today and said the boat was ready, I asked was it perfect, his response was it meets my approval?? Yea right. I drove another 1 1/2 hours one way and it still had light sand marks and pin holes in the finish. Told the manager it was not going to fly especially on my new boat. So he started wet sanding and most of the imperfections came out, but there where a couple thin areas that you could see the glass behind the gelcoat. I told him that this was not going to fly could he recoat it. So he sprayed another coat of gelcoat over it and said it would dry in a couple hours.

I was so pissed at this point I agreed I would wet sand it and buff it when I get home. Well on the way home road grime got in the tacky gel coat. To top it all off the boat was showroom clean when I dropped it off two weeks ago and it had leaves all in the boat and purple bird shit all over it. They all stained the gelcoat. Luckily I had a good coat of sealer on it and it washed off with minimal scrubbing. So if you need any gelcoat done my suggestion is DO NOT CARRY IT TO NORFOLK MARINE. John is a nice guy, but the glass repair guy sucks!!!!!!
