Tuna Update
Well after an as expected great snapper season we have been shifting our focus toward the tuna. There have been great numbers of sizable Cobia hitting the dock at Fourchon lately. However, Saturday's crew decided to devote the entire day to catching Yellowfin. We made bait perfect bait without any problems and headed straight to the edge of the canyon. When we pulled up to our first stop around 9:30am I knew we were in trouble before the boat even came to a complete stop! There was no current at all and the rig was covered with dolphin. The bait stealing kind not the delicious pan fried Mahi Mahi kind! The current was so dead they were just floating with their fins and bellies out the water. At that note all we could do is point the boat south and hope for the best. Twenty eight miles later we pulled up to second floater of the day which would prove to be the golden ticket eventually! We arrived to glass calm seas and no surface activity. I was marking fish down deep all day and knew that it was going to be a waiting game. Around 1pm the first fish busted off the bow of the Twin Vee and from that point it was tuna time or so we thought! From about 1pm to 5pm we went head to head with some decent summertime Yellowfins!! However, the tuna were winning till we found out the problem. After we pulled hooks on the first 2 fish the next 4 popped the 50 pound flourocarbon. We were snelling the 5/0 circle hooks and the eyes of the hooks were opened just enough to cut the line. A couple of polimar knots latter we manage to salvage the day and boat 3 solid yellowfin from 60 to 80 pounds and in the process broke in another tuna virgin! Just when you think you have seen it all you learn something new!! Live and learn and kill what you can along the way!!!
