Alaska report from Capt Rob 8/12/09
This one is for you BOOMER. (Boomer told me I needed to put up a report). I have been so busy fishing I just didn't have the time. To be honest I haven't taken many pics this summer . . . just keep on killing them and filling up the fish box. After all, I'm a fisherman not a photographer . . .
So here it goes.
This week I was BLESSED with some of my most favorite repeat customers, the Hiraoka family and friends. I had Bruce and Lisa, their son Brycen, and close friend (they call him uncle) Bobby on board. With positive attitudes and always a smile on their faces I knew we would have a great week on the Icy Rose . . . and a great and fun week it was. THANKS GUYS!!!
Day 1 they reminded me they wanted some salmon. So I told them to get comfy for the 55 mile open water run to the salmon "honey hole". We fished, and even though we lost a few, we came home with our limit of 4 king salmon (all nice ones!) and 7 silver (coho) salmon, along with 5 pink salmon. SWEET!
Day2 it was time for some halibut. We put 3 decent ones in the box in the 50-60 lb range and then left a slot open hoping for a big one. We culled fish all day and finally Bobby hooked up on a nice 215 pounder!!! Oh yeah baby that's what it's all about!!!
Day 3 we had a lot to do so we put in a quick limit of 40 pound halibut and went on our next mission which was to get some dungeness crabs and fresh oysters (these are real fresh seafood lovers). So we made an hour run, got 21 nice crabs, and 12 dozen fresh oysters! Yummy! That same night we put the oysters on the grill with same shoyu and rooster sauce . . . all I can say is holy s*** was that good. Then we had to force ourselves to munch on some fresh crab boiled in Alaskan amber beer . . . Thank you God I love my job!!!
Day 4 still full from the feast the night before we went halibut fishing. Knowing that we were very close to everybody having 100 lbs of fillets each already the plan was to catch a few small halibut then try for some salmon. First fish and Brycen put a whoopin' on a fatty 180 pounder! Now we are over what they wanted to take home. We put a couple more 30-40 pounders in and headed out for salmon. The bite was slowing down when we got there, but we still managed a nice king salmon and 2 more silvers.
Day 5 we didn't even go fishing! Huh? We went and had a nice big breakfast in Glacier Bay National Park, then made a run to a huge salmon cannery and picked up 9 cases of canned sockeye salmon. That is the GUARANTEED way to catch salmon haha!
I also added some pics from a trip two weeks ago of some serious halibut loads along with some rockfish. I don't even remember the sizes on them but I think it was like 188, 148, 109, and 80. New member on here "wheresthefishjr" was on the trip maybe he can refresh my memory . . . so many fish can't keep them straight any more.
So, that's it and i will try to get more pics this week.
Rob out.
