if your our of wrightsville, the channels back by figure eight hold alot of menhaden on high tide. its the last channel before the gray bridge. go back in there and on the finger canals and they'll be flipping. that's were we keep our boat, and can always find bait.
Fished the Greater Wilmington KMT this past Saturday and found plenty of menhaden at the boat basin just south of the carolina beach inlet. Don't go all the way into the basin, though. Right in front of the marina on the right they were on the bottom...
If you run out of the Carolina Beach inlet...be careful... it was a zoo Saturday morning... and low!!
mike have there been any bigguns flippin in there yet?
most of the bait schools are fairly large in size, over 3 inches. there are some smaller schools around the same area, but you can almost always count on geting bait back in there. we keep our boat back in one of the channels, a 34 express, and thats where we always get ours.

I think ncdrew was asking about the size of the bait, not the school size. For live bait fishing (kings, spainish, cobia, dolphin, etc.) we normally look for 8-10" menhaden. These are usually off the beach. Smaller ones inshore.
yeah you should really be careful running out of cb inlet, we ran in saturday afternoon after the dredge boat had pumped the channel full of sand. it was mid tide and we were in the center of the channel, so be careful

i was anchored in the inlet with the wife and dogs enjoying the day on masonboro and saw what you are talking about. it looked like the dredge was literally dumping sand into the channel.
i mean, what the
as far as bait, check out the old harbor masters restaurant at the carolina beach charter boat basin.

Thanks for the info guys...I went out Tuesday morning out of Carolina Beach...messed around before sunrise netting some small menhaden and mullet....right at sunrise we headed out Masonboro..saw a pelican diving righ near the inlet...came upon about an acre of big menhaden....got one good through on my new 12' Betts super pro and hauled in about 500 big menhaden...no exaggeration no way could we lift all of them into the boat...opened the net and release 90% of them...still had too many....fished all day and caught one Baracuda and 2 nice Spanish...on the way back in saw about another acre of menhaden right at the boat ramp at Carolina Beach near Snow's cut...also while out we found all the threadfin shad and Cigar minnows we could Sabiki up, just about anywhere we slowed to troll....it was a shame the fishing was so slow with so much high quality bait...
carolinah2o - 8/8/2006 9:46 PM I was thinking about going to Cucumber... Sunday though.. Let me know how you do Saturday...
I was wondering about Sat August 5th. I fished 30-30 Friday (the 4th) and caught nothing but sharks, plenty of bait on bottom. It'll be a few weeks before I get back.
i fished there the 5th. It was slow if you dont count the sharks. The fish that were caught were very nice 20-35 lb fish. We had one mid 20s on that got eatin by a shark and weighed 17 lb on boga. Plenty of bait but like you said it was dead on the bottom. We were the 4th boat there and within an hour or two there were 20. Heard fairway area was the same way with decent fish being caught but they were few and far between.
