Im hoping to take a long awaited trip to Charleston this fall. My dad and I use to go there 1 or 2 times a year back in the mid 90's (but w/o much luck) Id like to get into some good red fish or trout, but either way, Id just like to take him back down and actually catch fish, instead of wasting gas!!
Anybody got any suggestions for inshore, nearshore for that time of year??
We used to do Shark fishing trips out of Isle Of Palms too, but Im hoping to expand our techniques.
Thanks for the site, they have lots of good info and reports there. What time of year do the reds make thier run down around Charleston?
The idea about the guide probably is a better one, but Ive got my new boat, all my gear, I kinda like the pride of doing it myself. Heck if nothing else, just getting out down there would be worth the trip.
get some blue crabs and go out to dynamite hole, anchor up. cut the crabs in half, break off their claws, put them on a hook and drop them over. guaranteed to get huge reds or nice size bonnethead sharks.
That crab'n technique sounds alot like what Ive been learning up in Norfolk fishing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge....We caught some monsters out there this summer, well I shouldnt say we, but folks I fished with, did!!
I went to college at Texas A&M in Galveston, and in the early fall the Red bite off the jettys was AWSOME, so I was thinking it might be true arounc Charleston too?? Im reading all the reports on the Inshore page of Charleston Fishing.com, and man that sounds like a blast....I sure wish I could be there now.....
instead of cruising down the coast of Somolia.....but thats OK...my releif is scheduled for this Saturday. The sooner the better!!
Thanks for the info, I got lots of the Charleston Area Charts (some old ones off my ship, Ive been studing) Any other particular areas of intrest for that time of year? Sept/Oct??
Stop by The Charleston Angler in Mt. Pleasant (new store opening in the next couple of weeks!) when you get into town, and I will be glad to fill you in on what's biting and point out some places to go on a chart. The fishing inshore, nearshore, and offshore is typically better in October than September.
Thanks Dude, Any chance yall got some recommendations on a good boater friendly hotel?? Im gonna be towing my SeaHunt down, and hate the idea of leaving it out in the parking lot all nite, but I guess ya gotta do it sometimes. Heck I dont even know where the good ramps are in Charleston.
where are you staying? james island, downtown charleston, mt pleasant, daniel island? there are several good public ramps. shem creek in mt pleasant, isle of palms marina, wapoo on the james island side. just depends on where you staying as to your closest ramp.
Weve used the Isle of Palms marina before, but that was years ago, Im thinking somewhere around Mt Pleasant though, wont that give me better access to the rivers to the North and jettys to the east? Im gonna probably be headed down there next week to stop by the Coast Guard REC (gotta get fingerprinted for my license upgrade) buts thats only gonna be a day trip w/ the wife. Maybe we can check some stuff out then.
But really its gonna depend on whatever is going on for the time, I'll be listening in to whatever the local reports say!!
We're hoping to move to the Charleston Area sometime in the next 4-5years, any recommendations on housing areas to check out too? Maybe we'll turn our day trip into an overniter.
It depends on where you are staying but if you are on the IOP the marina there is not a bad launch spot. It may seem futher but it is as close to the jetties as Remley's Point and near as hard to deal with. They charge $10 for launch fee.
I am headed down Labor day weekend and will let you know how we do.
The Grillage(and please DO NOT ASK ON WWW.CHARLESTONFISHING.COM where it is ) is great that time of year for the big reds.
If you are gonna be there a few days buy you a crab trap and bait it up with chicken and just go by and pick up your bait everyday.. Also a cast net will help a lot as well.
You can get a lot of great info on charlestonfishing.com but there are a few smartA$$'s there as well but if you just keep up with inshore reports you can find out what everyone is doing.
Good luck
PS The "World Famous Grillage" is located off the end of Sullivans Island where the North Jetties run under the water. You may want to pick up a map of the Harbor and it will show this as well as the Dynamite hole and some others.

Thanks price, Im looking forward to it, not to mention a few late summer striper trips up to Lake Hartwell, the Dam is only 30min from my house in GA. And since ive only fished that area a few time in Dec/Jan I'll be searching fro advice for there too, its such an easier ride to Hartwell vs Lanier...(its 70miles 1 way for Lanier)
Dont they have a striper club up there at Hartwell, I met a guy last Jan, that was telling me about it.

How exactly do you figure IOP is as close to the jetties as Remley's?
There are 3 no wake zones on the ICW between IOP marina and the jetties.
I would recommend remleys or wappoo. The summer pleasure boat crowd will be thinning out by then.
tough on a novice, dynamite is good, he'd be better off drifting live shrimp over the ft sumpter rocks and jetties. but he is making a special trip I will give him some excellent live bottom #'S where he can catch Vermillion Black bass and kings (on balloons in the slick )...that way no one gets bored!!
