Default Hatteras/Frisco help

Hey Guys-
we have a group of 5 guys coming down to Hatteras on Friday for a week. We have a 3 day charter lined up on Marlin Mania out of Teach's Lair. We also have a house rented in Frisco. Just wondering what kind of fishing we might be a able to do on our own outside the charters. What types of fish can we expect to catch and what type of gear should we bring along? TIA for the info, any help is greatly appreciated. Can't wait to get down there!

You will enjoy the charter. THT member "Southern Fried" knows that charter crew very well. As far as fishing on your own, are you talking about surf fishing or do you have a boat?

people surf fishing have been catching some blues, a few puppy drum, croakers, and mullett. there was even a small cobia caught out at hatteras inlet yesterday. Offshoreincludes tuna, wahoo, and great billfishing going on right know. when you get in town stop buy and check out reddrum tackle shop in buxton. they will be able to help you out. also check out there website for the latest surf fishing report www.reddrumtackle.com/forums/

I was down there last week. Surf fishing was fairly slow and pier fishing was up and down, seemed most active on the northern piers -- in Kitty Hawk, KDH and Nags Head. Some action around Oregon Inlet. Buy The Virginian-Pilot and check the North Carolina section. They have a comprehensive daily fish report from surf to pier to offshore. If you're surf fishing on Hatteras, be prepared for a parking lot on the beach. The Outer Banks have been discovered and marketed and there must be OBX tags on half the cars in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Sometimes it's fender to fender on Cape Point. Good luck.

thanks for the input guys.
We're not bringing the boat so we'll be doing some surf fishing in addition to the charters. I'll check out red drum tackle to see how the bite is onshore. Any ideas for nightlife?

Nightlife and Hatteras/Frisco are not normally used in the same sentence. About the best you can do is make your own party or go to Hatteras Landing and watch the sunset on the docks. There is a little bar at Odens dock upstairs at the Breakwater Restaurant. Danny's wife does not allow allot of rowdy behavior.

on friday nights and monday nights the sandbar grille in buxton has kreokie(?spelling) and on sat. nights they have a band I hang out there a lot on the weekends i am off and have always had a good time. it does get crowded for dinner so i would go early. Also don't forget you can always have a bon fire on the beach. if you decide to do that one night let me know i will give you some firewood i have at my house. don't pay the high prices for the wood at the stores. if you have any more questions let me know.

I think we're going to hit the Wright Bros museum and Oregon Inlet fishing center on the way down. We'll prolly take the ferry to Ocracoke one day also. Our charters are Tues/Wed/Thurs so we'll try some DIY fishing on the off days.

just an update on this thread:
we had 3 great charters on Marlin mania. The capt and mates were outstanding. For the 3 days we realeased 7 whites and a 350 lb blue marlin. Also picked up 6 mahi for the grill.
Thoroughly enjoyed the area. Went to Okracoke for a day. Visited hatteras light house (too hot to climb) and also the Wright bros exhibit. We're already talking about planing next year's trip.
