I second the Garmin, mine's some sort of E-Trex, the yellow splashproof one. Used it as my only one the first year, now a backup.

Lowrance, same controls and features as the one on the boat, uses the same MMC cards, software is the same (I'm not the sharpest pencil in the box) learning curve was very short............

I've have the Lowrance H20, B&W model about 18 months. Have been very happy with it. Use it on the boat, in car or hiking. Comes with map built-in. Also bought the MapCreate pkg with it which lets you make up to 5 SIM cards of custom maps, over and over from the CD included. Have most of the US on one SIM card. The new color model is $269 at BoatersWorld web site. Waterproof and uses 2 AA batts or car adapter. As noted earlier, it's easy to use. You can visit the Lowrance web site and download a simulator to run on your PC.
