What offshore species can I catch at Hatteras in mid August?
Our first time fishing offshore at Hatteras. We will be at Avon from August 12 to 18. If the weather is good what can we expect to catch trolling offshore? How far out is a typical run that time of year? What lures should we bring? We have a 25' Pursuit w/ twin F150's and outriggers. Thanks.
Re: What offshore species can I catch at Hatteras in mid August?
Blue and White Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, Dolphin, Dolphin, Dolphin, and a rare YFT, BFT. Bring Islander, Seawitches, Black Barts, Spreader Bars, and buy the Ballyhoo here, or have Baitmasters in Florida rig em and have them overnighted to your rental house for you.
Typical run is to the temp break and fish, most days from Oregon Inlet Fishing Center it's 35 miles each way. From Hatteras Inlet (Teach's Lair Marina) it's 20 or so miles. Depends on the stream. Best bet, get on the water early and follow the Local charter boats to the grounds.
Good luck with the trip, hope you ain't trailering the pursuit all the way from Utah. If you are, consider parking it at my house, leave the keys and I'll take care of it for ya year round, I'll even run it every other day to keep the gas fresh for you! No charge of course!

Thanks for the offer! Actually our boat is kept at my brothers house in MD. If you are respectful, do the big charter guys mind if you tag along? How far back should we hang? I guess we could be stealthy and just use our radar to track the fleet? Thanks.

No, they have no problem if you stay a thousand yards or so off. When on the grounds work the area around them, on nice days it's usually a fiberglass jungle anyways.
During an inlet run when it's nasty it's nice to have that carolina flare punch a trough through the waves.
Re: What offshore species can I catch at Hatteras in mid August?
Is there one place better than the others down there for bait/tackle and advise? Does Hatteras inlet any less hairy than Oregon inlet for us smaller boats? Thanks.
Re: What offshore species can I catch at Hatteras in mid August?
Stop at Tw's in Kitty Hawk and the new store in KDH on your way down to Avon. Ask for advise there. Also, Red Drum on the left just as you get into Buxton is good, and then Frisco Rod and Gun on the right just before you leave Frisco towards hatteras is a good tackle shop with everything you need. Teach's lair marina where you launch down at hatteras has grease charts available for hatteras inlet and plenty of bait also if you can rig your own.
Both inlets can get big, but during the summer it's usually very manageable and flat. You do have to watch out for the thunderstorms that always seem to get between you and the inlet when you're coming back in. Your boat is more than capable of making both inlets even during the rougher times. Don't be scared and follow the marked channels, remember the sounds are very shallow off the marked channels.
