I have been nearshore fishing for several years. Just bought a 25' Carolina Classic to get offshore. I will be fishing out of the Oak Island, NC area. Would like advice from people that are familiar with the area on the basics of offshore fishing in the boat mentioned. What type of rods, reels, line, leaders, baits, lures, teasers, you know all that stuff that you would recommend for a basic starting setup that would allow for going after dolphin, wahoo, etc.
Thanks a bunch!
Hello and welcome!
The first thing to do is visit the Sandbar! There are many types of Lures, Baits. and Teasors to view...
Regards and Good Luck Fishing,
I second that motion!

You will probably get tons of advice, but you will need to develop experience. I talked to the local tackle shop in Morehead, where they put me in contact with a local mate with loads of experience. I'm sure a local tackle shop in your area, can put you in contact with someone. Hire them to go out with you and show you the ropes. The knowledge you get from them in terms of rigging, speed, distance behind the boat, and spread, will be invaluable.
Best of luck,
Doug

Thanks Doug!
I plan to do exactly that, just hoping to get an idea of the basic equipment folks would suggest before then.
I think the reason you're not getting an answer here is because the answer would be a 4000 word essay. Do a search on here for each specific item you've listed (line, rods etc.) then ask them one by one. Hope this helps.
It doesn't have to be that involved. It would be nice to just have folks suggestions on a good starting point. The boat has outriggers, down riggers and rocket launchers, so maybe the type of spread, rod and reel ideas and a good choice for the types of lures to begin with.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Buy a Dave Workman Kingfishing video and you will learn more about what types of equipment to use, how to rig, and just about anything else you need to know. You should go with high speed reels. We use Penn GS 545's with 20lb test Yozuri Hybrid line and if you are spooling the reels yourself it would pay to buy a 2900 yard spool. I know Tex's Tackle in Wilmington sells it and if I remember correctly it was around $60.00 for the spool. There is so much to go over it would be impossible to do here, but the video will be a tremendous starting point.
Go buy some TLD 25's and some Star rods. Stay away from the Boaters World rods, The basic rods aren't much cheaper than a star or Aerial(Made by star) for the basic rod, but I have been going through the Outer Banks Customs form Boaters World like crazy lately. Start with seawitches, stubby bubblers, aliens, and Islanders. That should get you started. Always check and make sure your hooks are sharp, use fresh bait, and have fun. Oh, buy a good gaff and get ready to have fun!!
