Default Outer Banks food.

What is best place to stay? Best place to eat? Any small boating locations?

Planning to visit this July and am looking for insights. Will be trailering my small aluminum skiff. Mostly planning sighseeing stuff.

Thanks.

Solar
I'm heading up there for the first two weeks of July. I'll be in Manteo at Pirates Cove. Where are you staying? That will have a lot to do with where you eat.

The best place to eat is under the awning of my camper after a long day of fishing. Some tunies on the grill and some shrimp in the pot, a few cold ones....goooood lawd I can taste it now.

I believe we have a reservation at a campground in Ocrakoke. My wife handles all reservations and stuff. I hope I have right spelling for place. It's only campground accepts reservations in Outer Banks. We will be a few days in Charleston. I believe from 0701 to 0706 or something like that. Then on to Outer banks. On inland to a couple o lakes along way to Kentucky then down GA back to FL.. About 6 weeks of travel tween hotels and camper.

We travel in a Silverado 2500Hd with Lance camper towing a small yellow aluminum boat. We leave the plastic boat at home as it's a bit large and heavy to tow that far with too much stuff easily removed from it.

Y' all will recognize me on sight.

See you there..

If you are staying at Ocracoke, then the most popular place is Howard's Pub. It is always open. A little of everything. Personally, I do not think it is the greatest food, but it is usually pretty good. It is a good place to go at the end of the day and a good place to have a few beers. Also, you can go to dinner late. The kids like it, too. On the other extreme, my wife and I really like Cafe Atlantic. It is more upscale and more expensive. Not necessarily a great place for kids. We have had some great meals there. Another very popular place is The Back Porch. Most people talk about it being great. I have had some good meals there, but some average. My wife really likes The Back Porch. I have never had a bad meal at Cafe Atlantic and have had some truly great meals there. Used to go to The Pelican all the time but for some reason stopped going. They would often have grilled pompano as a special that was very good. We would often check with them during the week to see when they were going to have the grilled pompano. You can get buckets of seafood by the water at SmacNally's (spelling???). Never done it but sitting by Silver Lake is really relaxing. Have a good trip. My wife just walked by and said that she likes the atmosphere of The Back Porch and The Pelican more than Cafe Atlantic but she agrees that Cafe Atlantic has very good food. She told me not to put down The Back Porch. Also, if you are taking kids to Ocracoke, then Howard's Pub is a definite.

Will second The Back Porch. We always eat there. Crab cakes with red pepper sauce. . .If you make it up to Nags Head, try Basnight's Lone Cedar on the causeway to Manteo. Nice atmosphere (old duck hunting stuff, antique gallon oyster cans, etc.) homemade cornbread, good seafood. Can be busy, though.

Smacknalleys for lunch - couple of beers and a black n'blue burger are hard to beat sitting on silver lake. Back porch is great, as is Cafe Atlantic like mentioned above. Pelican is good for a couple brews and some live music later on, and they used to have a great breakfast (if you like fancy stuff). Pony Island is the normal breakfast hangout, and the line usually gets long - but the food is decent. Never had anything there other than breakfast though. Howards is ok, probably safest place to take the kids (selection wise). Howards also has an awesome beer selection!
If you are in Ocracoke you are gonna be pretty happy where ever you go - its a great place.

We will be in Ocracoke 7/1->7/5 ourselves; we're planning to take O2 with us this time, weather permitting (will feel stupid ferrying it across the Pamlico but otherwise we have no land transportation) and we are staying at the Harborside.

Ocracoke eateries are nothing spectacular and all priced about the same; expect $20/adult minimum. Our favorite restaurants at Ocracoke are the Pony Island and the Jolly Roger(exception to the $20 rule).
Back Porch, Howards Pub, and Cafe Atlantic are OK (food and service).

Manteo area is very nice with plenty of water suitable for a skiff. Several good B&B's in town, and some moderately priced motels too. City docks should have a place to tie up. Pirate's Cove is a marina community just outside of town proper with lots of amenities and homes or condos for rent. Many include a boat slip. There is a ramp right across from Pirates Cove, and there is a smaller well protected ramp in downtown Manteo. Restaurants...frankly many of them have grown too big for their britches. The service and food in recent years has become uneven and the prices high. Very few I can reliably recommend. Sam and Omies for breakfast or lunch is old Nags Head at its best. Mama Kwans and Tortuga's Lie are interesting places for dinner. Striper's is a newcomer to Manteo and seems to be pretty good. The Pirates Cove restaurant is good and the view very good.

Bob,
Thanks for the Sam & Omies recommendation, we'll have to check that out. There's a place in Nags Head that always has a big breakfast crowd, but I'm not trying to step on Solarfry's thread. Big Al's seems like a tourist trap but the kids like it.

We vacation at PC every year and will be closing on a place on June 30th, so we'll be up more often, but will also be renting it out since its a long drive right now (but an eventual retirement place). The PC restaurant is Hurricane Mo's.

My biggest peave is that you can't get a burger medium rare, medium well is normal for most places.

My wife and I are heading down to Ocracoke from KDH tomorrow after work. So we will be there Thursday the 15th - Saturday the 17th. Just a short trip to get away. I will tell you that if you want to find me I will be at SmacNally's drinking PBR's and watching the Fleet come in. There is not a better place to relax on the Outer Banks than that bar. Great location, great prices, great people.

On the Night of the 16th, a local musician and one of my best friends will be bringing is National tour to SARGASSO'S on the island. I am thinking they will start playing around 9 or 10. He is touring with a band called SOAP, both very good. So if anyone else is going to be down on the island friday come by and check him out. www.noahgarrett.com

I will be there!!!

Of the places I've been to, Basnight's Lone Cedar (Nags Head) and Hurricane Mo's (Pirate's Cove) are the places we liked so far. I did not care for Mako Mikes (Kitty Hawk or Kill Devil Hills), but for the basics - NY Pizza Co (Kitty Hawk or Kill Devil Hills) or Carolina Pizza (Nags Head) and I think its in the same shopping center as West Marine, in case you need anything for the boat.

Stripers is our favorite - the Striped bass is outstanding, the service is really good and the prices are decent for the food quality. Bassnight's lone cedar is just too much for my family of 4....
