Random Quote: whatever it is...... the details make the difference
After a fruitless attempt to fish this past weekend and the seas looking perfect, I slipped out of work for the day to drown a few baits. Made several calls to friends but no takers, so I went solo.. Threw on the PFD and the Epirb and was good to go.
left the inlet at 5:00 and had lines in by 6:50..started off at the big rock..Ten minutes into it the planer rod gets hit, 12 pound king in the boat. Thirty minutes later another king on the planer rod. It's starting to get crowded so I head offshore where I find some pretty water around 500 foot which leads to a nice rip. At ten o"clock the left rigger with a jimmy k crystal witch snaps with a 15 or so pound mahi. A thirty pound bull free jumping behind her. I reel the right rigger in so it's in his face and he eats it. I set it back in the holder and get the cow in the boat. Bull jumps off before I could back to it...I reset the baits and continue on the rip. At 10:50 the left rigger snaps, I look back and see an estimated 300 pound blue airing it out with my blue/white islander, I grab the 50 wide and hang on. He does a 180 faster than I thought could happen and passes me greyhounding the whole way. I reel my ass off trying to catch up but it wasn't meant to be. He got too much slack and pulled off....Regardless, I was pumped but somewhat disapointed no one was there to share the show this fish had put on. Radio reports had mentioned several blues had been seen and of at least one 500 pound fish caught.
I reset and continued on picking up a few more mahi's. At 1:30 the right rigger with the crystal witch snaps again, I look back and see the bottom fall out. I suspect a nice tuna and he's a slob, makes one hell of a long run while I try to clear lines. He continues to tear off line and is getting considerably closer to dumping the 30 wide. After a 30 minute battle where I did nothing but chase the fish to gain line, he pulled off No equpment failure, just pulled off. I was disapointed but have had a good day fishing so I continued on.
Ended the day with 5 gaffers, 2 kings and some memories of the ones that got away
As awsome of a day it was, it did have a major downside While gaffing one of the mahi's late in the day, I lost a freaking brand new tiagra 50 wide over the side. Still haven't figured how the hell it happened, but I was able to grab the line and thought I was gonna be ok..hell no, it free spooled to the bottom. After hand lining 700 or so yards of line the freaking knot on the spool came loose....OUCH
dang dude - sorry to hear about the tiagra, sounds like some of my luck. That certainly puts a downer on the day, although it sounds like a beautiful day on the water otherwise
