Anyone familiar with this facility that is on the intracoastal in Socastee, SC? Quite a bit of development going on in that area and this marina would be logical place to keep my boat should I decide to purchase a building lot. Any info would be appreciated.

I am not familiar w/ the facility, but my family has owned a house in the area since before I was born, and IMO in Socastee on the ICW would be a stupid place to keep a boat if you ever want to go fish, you are looking at a good 45 min clip to go fishing inshore.........If you like watching a worn out draw bridge swing a few times a day it is pretty cool, other than that it doesn't have much to offer for boaters.
Thanks for honest repsonse. You may not know that that developers have been buying up huge chunks of property in that area and building some upscale and expensive gated communities. Also will widen 707 from Socastee to 17 to five lanes. I would imagine that because the direct coastal area is so built out, an effort is being made to turn today's trash into tomorrow's treasure. May be an investment opportunity if nothing else.

Osprey Marina is acutally a pretty nice and well run facility. The rest rooms are alwaays clean as are the docks and the grounds. It is a fres water facility that is a LONG way from either the Little River Inlet or Winyah Bay, In Georgetown. If you are looking for a pretty nice, family friendly facility with access to the waterway and the Waccamaw River Then Osprey is a darned nice facility. If you are a salt water fisherman, then there are better places nearer the inlets.
With all due respect to "Oldmonitor" I have never seen any drunks hanging around. Skiboats, motoryachts, pontoon boats, express cruisers .....sure.....but nary a drunk in site........And yes, there is a great deal of water front development taking place. There is a pretty large project in the vicinity of Enterprise Landing with a bunch of piers and docks being built. The downside? Pretty soon it will be no wake all the way from NY to Miami.

ok what do you call the Tiki-Bar at the 544 bridge or the Boathouse Bar up at 501 and run by any of the low tide sand beaches and stop and look at all the beer cans thrown up into the woods. I live in myrtle and ive gone out on the weekend in that area and cant find a nice thing to say about it. I would love to see coast guard and SCDNR bring in 40 officers and hammer down on this run-away train. On any sunny weekend Just stand at one of the boat landings at sundown and watch, hell go to peachtree landing its just up the waterway from Osprey

I agree with problem with access to inlets. I presently have a condo in Little River and keep my boat at Silver Coast Marina. Very convenient for sure. Problem is if I move full time, I would want a house and double garage in gated community and the developments in vicinity of Enterprise Road may fit the bill. Cypress River Plantation is the development where some of the day docks are going in and I am looking at a lot in Osprey Plantation which is on the other side of Enterprise Road off of Butler Rd. Could still keep my boat at Silver Coast of course but Osprey will be offering $2 per foot per month discount for Osprey Plantation residents. Just something to consider as it is about a $700/year savings.

$700 is a lot of money, but when you consider the intended usage for the boat, ocean fishing I assume, I'd look elsewhere besides Osprey Marina. Just to be Devil's Advocate, have you thought about how much fuel you'd burn just to get to the ocean from Osprey as opposed to another marina? Your outlet choices are Georgetown and Little River as there is no other way to the Atlantic from there.
Beezer,
I fully understand. I do presently enjoy quick access to Little River inlet and that would be tough to give up but no much because I am an avid fisherman. I just enjoy doing a little bottom fishing and doing the Bird Island thing. If I do decide to build in Osprey Plantation, I could just leave my boat at Silver Coast especially if I intend to pursue saltwater activities. As to the $700 savings, at today's prices that could get eaten up fairly quickly making the run from Socastee to Little River inlet. My primary concern regarding the Osprey Marina is that it is somehow associated with the proposed Osprey Plantation development. So if it is well maintained and in decent area, the residential development should follow suit.

As with anything else in this area, you get what you pay for and you pay alot for the best. Higher cost housing will eventually weed out the undesired elements that would bring down the development and the marina itself. Like most other things in this area, as you probably well know, the problems usually come from those who don't necessarily "belong." By this I mean that those who spend their hard earned money to live somewhere nice are less apt to bring that area down. If there are undesirables around the marina, you can bet the majority aren't the owners of boats sitting in slips there, they are probably passing through or are just there for the party. A good, high end development with nice housing should not only increase property value, but it should also bring more desirable tenants to the marina and local area. As I see it, any downside to the marina should only be improved with a high end, gated development.
Beezer,
That is exactly how I feel. I love Little River and also would like to live in Litchfield or Pawleys Island but unfortunately most of the bargains are gone. Socastee has the potential for growth and both the Cypress River and Osprey Plantations should signal the beginning of the redefining of this area. Getting in now under $100K may turn out to be a real winner both in terms of an investment and/or a decent place to live. I know the housing market with all of the speculators is getting a bit more risky now but land is land. I guess it is time to poop or get off the pot for me.

I was answering the original question that was specific to Osprey Marina. Of course there are a bunch of drunken idiots in teh waterway and at the locations you mentionsd, but I have never seen that sort of crowd at the Marina.
I always had problems with the guys at Osprey getting boats out for my techs to work on, more than one time they were outright rude, but that was 5 years ago.
