Default Need Info About Bald Head Island

I'll be visiting the Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach area in late May, and I'll be bringing my 18 foot Boston Whaler. I'm trying to line up some day trips in the boat, and I was thinking about Bald Head Island. However, from most of the information I've found on the internet, it looks like its just an upscale real estate development/tourist trap. Is it worth visiting for a couple of hours plus getting lunch or dinner? Or are there better ways to spend the day?

Skipper,

I go about once a year and either rent a house or stay at Theodosias, a very nice B&B right on the water. If going for a day trip I'd suggest you rent a golf cart and tour the island. Find a deserted stretch of beach and hangout with the family. Other than that not a whole lot to do except eat, drink or fish.

I make a day trip to Bald Head about once a year from Wrightsville. Generally arrive for lunch and then do the golf cart thing around the island for a couple of hours (lighthouse visit etc.) and back up the waterway.

Is there free docking available if we want to get lunch and do the golf cart tour, or do we need to rent a slip for the day? The website for the Bald Head Island Marina (www.baldheadisland.com) doesn't have any information regarding this.

Can one still get up the creek on the backside? It used to be the only place to dock before they built the marina.

The last time I went they charged a small fee for docking. Times before it was free. It may depend on the size of your boat, how busy they are or they may have changed the policy...call the marina and ask. It is a pleasant way to spend 4-5 hours (round trip).

Baldhead Island is a nice place to spend a half of a day. The dockmaster might charge you $20.00 for the day and the golf cart rental is about $40.00 for a half/day but it is worth it. Let me know when you are going, I might be able to let you use one of my carts( If they have a charge). There is some good fishing right inside the marina most of the year but I don't know about May.

between brady and i we can help you out. i have a slip you can use for the day. the fishing in may is great in and around the marina. it is a up scale real estate development but it is not a tourist trap.

Thanks for the offers, guys. I'll check back with you when I have a better idea of when exactly I'll be there.
