That's insane. I wonder if the sportfisher was disabled somehow. I can't imagine just not seeing a ferry.

I've passed those ferry's in the slough in the dark. They always look further away until you pass them.

Looks like the captain of the sport fisher had good safety gear ready with a raft.

Who was watching the radar?

Nobody, that's who.

I would guess that cloudy, zipped up bridge enclosure played a part in this.

Not saying it doesn't have a radar but, ...... It does have an unsightly starboard side. Must've been calm or it would have taken on water like a funnel. Glad no one was hurt.

“I saw a gaping hole in its right side and I could see inside,” she said.

That's never good.

I was told "Ferry blinded him with its spotlight. He couldn't see which way to go, guessed wrong, turned to port, and got smacked".

I can believe that. Had a ferry light me up near Cedar Island back in September. Are they supposed to do that? I thought it was pretty rude.

No one should put a spot on any vessel making way at night unless you are a low life thief on a stolen boat and being chased by leo chopper.

The ferry has radar, and should of slow down and hit full reverse if any chances of collision were present.

Not a good situation for all involved.

So very sad. I have to suspect that it could have been avoided.

I am not sure about other areas, but they will certainly light you up around Hatteras with their spot light. And that spot light ain't no joke. I've been out there in my skiff many nights last year and have been blinded on the way to or from some flounder holes. It has gotten where I will gig toward Frisco till midnight until the ferry system shuts down for the night, before I will run toward the inlet.

I believe the ferry system monitors channel 13, please correct me if I am wrong. There definitely was a lack of communication.

Lighting somebody up with a spotlight is a guaranteed way to blind them. Somebody running a ferry should know better.

Where does that boat slip? I think it may have been next to me in May.

It is a good thing the fenders were out to prevent any additional damage, it could have been much worse
