I live on teh exact opposite end of the strand, Little River area. In Garden City, you will see more tourist traffic than I do but it is still a great area to live! Real Estate appreciation is hard to keep up with. You couldn't drag me out of here with a bulldozer! If you ever want to call, let me know, I'll give you a couple of numbers.

We go there several times a year and like Steveyacht said, you'll see a lot of the tourist traffic there when MB has events. Twice now we've hit both biker weeks, but never had any issues. The place we go to is on Woodland Avenue in Garden City, about a block off the beach. We all just walk to the beach when it's time to go. Like everywhere else development is going strong. Lots of eateries and small shops along the hwy 17 stretch, there's actually a decent little flea market and water slide park there, along with mini-golf and of course all the more expensive entertainment options in MB. Surfside and Garden City are basically joined together by hwy 17, transition is nothing more than a sign.
Hwy 17 can get really really busy with all the traffic. Murrell's Inlet road is just a few more miles south with excellent bar and grills down that way, the problem is finding ramps, we use the public one and pay the $5 for the parking so we don't walk a mile for the free parking. Murrell's inlet is a joy to put out of with the rock jetties. We cruise up to The Pier at Garden City and listen to the live band they have on the end at the bar. Been anchored up on calm days bottom fishiong and listening to the music sometimes!
I like the area and can't wait to get down to my friends house again this year.

Hope that helps, my 2 cents at least.
