Default Bogue Inlet and the Point

Was down there this weekend. Seems like the new inlet is working. I went out a couple of times last year. At the Point, there actually is a point. The sand is moving back to build up the Point area. It seems to be filling in the old inlet. (slow but sure) Lots of folks fishing in the old inlet.

Did watch a boat go out of the old inlet. It took a beating, but they must have known where they were going. (or got lucky) To me it seemed very dangerous to go out that way and only save a little time and fuel. Looked white most of the way. Has anybody else tried this?

I know there isn't any money for maintaining the inlet, but I did hear they will pump sand from the ICW to help build up the Point.

I read money was funded for Bogue and other shallow water inlets in NC. I have been out and in through the old inlet a few times last summer. It was slick any time I went through the old inlet. One marker was left at the old inlet. I have always ask why one marker was left.

Evidently, Ophelia changed a few things around the inlet. (among other things she changed like every dock in Carteret county )

I would not suggest trying to go out the old inlet. The one boat I saw made look very dangerous. Maybe some of the locals can comment.

I think the old channel is much easier and smoother than the new channel. I'll take it every time.

From my point of view Bogue inlet is unpredictable and dangerous old or new inlet, and subject to change with any storm, hurricane or not. Opheila definitly changed the inlet, left the new one about 4 feet deep at low tide near the mouth (not sure if they did anything about that)...

There are just too many moving parts there, I have no confidence that the Corps or anyone else can make the inlet consistently safe.

My house on EI is about 5 miles from the Island Harbor Marina...even so I Trailer my boat down to Morehead and go out there.

the one bouy that is left in the old channel was left there because it was too shallow for the Coast Guard bouy tender to get to it.

When I watching that boat go thru the old inlet. The old inlet was all white water, but I could look across and see the new inlet because that was where the gap in the breakers was. The wind was blowing SE 10-20.

Thanks for the heads up on the depth. I am in SP and go out either inlet, makes the choice easier.
