Folks, the wife and I are looking for a new spot to vacation. We normally vacation at the Outer Banks (rent a house in Avon for a week). But this year we want to see if there are any other spots down along the N. Carolina, S. Carolina or even Georgia coast line. I would like a place that I can bring the boat (23" Wellcraft) an do some off shore fishing. We would like something away from the crowds and similar to the peace and quiet we fine in the Outer Banks. Thanks for any suggestion you can throw my way.
For "away from the croud spot" my favorite is St Mary's Ga. It is abouta 10 mile run to the inlet. Ferandina Beach is just a few miles away byboat or car. Very small town, with a couple of good rest. and bars.
We like Beaufort, SC...never fished out of there. We run the boat from Charleston, keep it at Downtown Marina, stay at B&B. Several B&B's, restaurants, bars, etc. all within walking distance. The marina has a courtesy car for the grocery about 2 miles away. Lots of southern history. I highly reccomend the Cuthbert House...we like the "carriage house" rooms!!
I like Beaufort, NC. The boating out the inlet may be a little crowded but the inlet is wide and Beaufort isn't crowded with tourist; at least I don't consider it to be.
Fishing depends on your vacation dates. Pretty slow right now. Once the water hits about 75, blue fish and Spanish macheral are abundant about 4 miles out. There are reefs about 10 miles and more about 20 miles. There are free county ramps, including one next to the Downtown Marina, if you'd like to save some docking fees. The rest of the info from Reelescape is right on target.
Brunswick County beaches fit the description you are giving. Good inshore, nearshore, and offshore fisning. Beach towns more so than tourist towns--not much in the way of Putt-Putt courses and water slides. Basically just houses and people. Plenty of places to launch a boat. Close enough to Myrtle Beach and Wilmington to take advantage of the Shopping but still plenty far enough away if you kow what I mean. Check out any of the following places--Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, Holdens Beach, Oak Island, Southport.

Edisto Island, SC. Been there many times and loved it each time. No crowds, beautiful beach, nice quite atmosphere and good fishing off shore as well in the Edisto river. Highly recommend! http://www.edistobeach.com/

I will second Edisto. Went there every summer growing up and my Aunt and Uncle still have a house there. Very much a 'Beach town' without even the slightest feel of tourism. I think the fishing is a little better as you move farther north or south, but the town itself is great.
