Which capt seaguls charts should I order
Best bait shop in/near the kill devil hills area
I will try to get at least 1 day offshore is this a strip bait/ballyhoo preferred fishery or could I get by with what I pull up here for the yft

Don't have a lot of time to get into the other stuff currently but if you are staying in the KDH area, TW's Bait & Tackle is the place. they are building a new store as we speak, and maybe by then it will be completed!! But there is on still open by the 7-11 in Kitty Hawk, and they moved their other store to Pirates Quay till the new one is built. I will give more later...

I personally like the stop n shop on the beach road across from the monument (mp 8ish). They have a very large assortment of rigs season related, and prices as good as any. The desk clerks may be a little short and not so helpful, but they have more tackle than tw's, ti's or whalebone, and selection is good. Now the best for helpful is frisco rod and gun , but that's an hour and a half drive from KDH.

Mostly in may it's going to be a tuna and dolphin game, with the occasional smallish 200+ marlin hookup. Mostly dolphin. What you drag up there is what you can drag down here. Most charters use naked hoos, and maybe dress em up with islanders in blue, bluewhite, black purple. Don't forget the meat to chunk to the dolphin at a weedline, makes em crazy. Drag green machines and spreaders for tuna, way back. I like naked hoos on the flats, dressed hoos on the outside, and a green machine wwb for the tuna. Run to the point and look for green water.

For inshore there's not much going on in may. Bottom fishing is the name of the game. Croaker, spot, flounder, skate, maybe a small striper left over. Cobia won't be there then. Double bottom rig on structure is the name of the game for keeping the kids entertained, even if it is skates (they pull hard).

Now thats some good, local advice. Thanks

Don't know about the fishing there right now but go to Kellys for dinner. Haven't been to OBX in awhile but I assume Kellys is still there. Great place to eat!

Kelly's is ok to eat but more for the meat market night life, He has changed his focus into slinging goldschlager and beer, and charging for catering the big parties.

For good eats consider these...
Front Porch Cafe for great Coffee in the morning (KDH, Nags Head Locations)
Black Pelican for seafood, wood oven pizzas
Bob's grill for under 20$
Prime Only for martini's, steaks
JK's for steaks (best)
Hooters for wings
Sam and Omies for breakfast (a classic)
Basnights, tale of the whale, Windmill Point for scenery during dinner
Mako Mike's for great fresh bread, seafood
Awful Arthur's for fresh seafood (best)
Mama Kwans for spicy carribean fare
Jimmy's seafood for all you can eat buffet seafood
Tortuga's lie for more sophisticated college atmosphere
Meridian 42 for a 200$ experience, (Carribean menu, wear a jacket)
La Fogata (nags head location only) for Mexican
Daredevils Pizza

Stay away from:
Dirty Dicks Crab house (kitchen is horribly dirty, have failed their inspection twice)
Golden Corral here on the beach (food poisoning last year)
Slammin Sammy's (horrible service)
Cosmo's Pizza (while great pizza, the owner is a real ass and is rude to his customers.)

Sorry "blue" gotta disagree with one of your food choices.
Had nothing but good service and great food from Slammin Sammy's
It has been off season though - about the only time I'll eat out.

Frisco Rod and Gun would be the place to go. It is a longer drive but worth it. I go there a lot. My 2nd pick would be TW's bait and tackle. They have 2 locations as mentioned before. Also Mama Kwans have great fish tacos. Also if you make the drive down to Frisco Rod and Gun, you also should stop in Buxton at the Red Drum Tackle Shop. They also have a little bit of everything.

Trigger,

Well it was along time (2 years) ago on July fourth after the fireworks and they were busy. We waited about 40 minutes with no waitress before we got up and left, and slammin sammy moore was obviously not there. To be honest, it prolly would have been ok food wise, but I haven't tasted it so I don't know. Also it could have been the seasonal help that night. I debated while typing that line in because I wasn't sure, but I went ahead and did it anyways, because it was the case. The kitchen, however is very clean, and I should go ahead and recommend them, after all he does have 42 tv screens in the joint. Might I also add after further review of my last post (thanks trigger):

Recommended:
Slammin Sammy's (give em a shot)
Don Gato's
Ianjay Cafe good lunch
Beach Bread Co for dinner
Barefoot bernie's
Sunburn's for drinks
Hurricane Moe's if Black Pelican is too busy abross the street
Colington Cafe for a nice night out
Ocean Boulevard for a decent steak (little pricey)

Also, Red Drum tackle has a good assortment of lures and rods, nice guys and are very helpful, but it's just too far of a drive from KDH, as is Frisco Rod and Gun. Also good is Frank and Frans in Avon, they are restructuring the store now and won't be back up until maybe may. To be honest, you can't go wrong with any of the tackle shops down here, they all want you to catch fish so that you'll come back and fish again.

JBW, where are you at in Frisco? Maybe we could hook up and fish a day together during the show in may. Gimme a PM.

Good info by blueh2o. Just a couple comments..
Had lunch at Slammin Sammys super bowl Saturday. Good service and bloody mary(s).. I do not do StopnShop tackle for reasons stated. I agree on Sam and Omies and you must have dinner at least once at Lone Cedar on the Cause way. The owner is the State Senator for the area and he will be milling around shaking hands and hugging babies. He is a Democrat ,but in spite of that he is a good man and has done a lot for the area. Great food and plenty of it! My favorite tackle shop is Whalebone Tackle on the Manteo causeway. Pretty good selection and they do repair work. It is hard to get local info at any of the shops because of part-time help. Shops down on Hatteras Island are good but the THT group will be in and around Pirates Cove. That will be the best place to buy Ballyhoo, as the they really have the volume and the bait will be "fresher frozen". Purhase a mix of smalls and medium. You will want to fish the "Point". About 35 miles+/- SE of the Inlet. Bring your rigs and I suspect they will do fine. Best to buddy up with another boat(s)..Should be plenty of charter boats around but most of the time they turn a deaf ear to outboards..
West Marine in Nags Head has a good selection of charts. Thay have Capt Seagull but I can't remember the number.
Auguste will be publishing a info sheet that will give you a lot of additional info..

Good Luck and have Fun!!

Blue -

I am going to have to disagree with you on JK's being the best steakhouse on the beach. My wife and I went about a week ago with another couple. HORRIBLE Service, and food was pretty much Horrible to. I hadn't been to JK's in a while, but our friends watned to go. For the price of JK's you may as well go to the best steakhouse on the beach PRIME ONLY! Or atleast in my opinion.

Also, the SeaPro is gone sold it on here. Now I have the old 17ft Edgewater back in my driveway.

Prime Only is a great place. Cost me a lot for Valentine's day. Well worth it.

Too bad about Kellys, always enjoyed the food and the good service. Last time we were there for the blue fish run tho, the wait staff seemed to be getting mighty light in the loafers ( if ya know what I mean).
