Default Golden tilefish

I was reading about golden tilefish in the January edition of Saltwater Sportsman and was wondering if there are fishable populations off the NC coast? Do any THT members have experience with this fishery? If so, could you share info to get others started? Depth, bottom structure, rigs, bait, and general location. I fish out of Morehead City in a 24' Albemarle. Thanks for the help.

I will be trying to catch some this upcoming year. Just got a Kristal xl75

Google scdnr marmap program or sc marmap
tons of info about snowy grouper and tilefish if I recall correctly. I think the commercial fishing did them in though.

Not sure if any of this info is exactly what you are looking for, but it is interesting nonetheless

Thanks for the reply Schoolsout. Very interesting reading regarding a number of species. Sounds like like the 100 fathom line is the place to start and then find some bottom structure. Congrads on the new ride.

i think the tile fish like soft bottoms so they can burrow down. I've never caught one, but remember reading about that. I think there is an article in Big Game Journal about them too. Few months back was when the issue came out.

Only thing I have done is fish a few humps off charleston in 650 feet of water and caught some decent size snowy grouper. That was manually realing, so I didn't do it for long.

I've never caught a tile fish but I did have a chance to eat one at a little mom & pop pub outside of Gettysburg, PA this summer and can tell you that it is outstanding eating. Wish we could catch them here in NC. I'd certainly target them if they were within range.
