Default Long Beach Pier to close

Noticed an article in a newspaper (The Daily Reflector- Greenville NC) today which indicated that Long Beach Pier (supposedly the state's longest), along with the tackle shop and restaurant / bar, will close after the New Year's celebration to make way for oceanfront development.

I feel certain that some anglers will not be too pleased.

This has been an ongoing thing over the last few months. From what I understand, the owner is going through a divorce and was offered FAR more money for the property than he could ever hope to make on it in a lifetime. He owns 4 adjacent beachfront lots and OKI property values have absolutely exploded over the last 18 months. On top of all this, he took on a huge debt when he recently repaired the pier from hurricane damage. Quite a few factors added up to this decision, but I don't think the owner had any better options.

Besides, taxpayers would much rather rebuild expensive condos than an old wooden pier after the next big blow!

You'd have to sell an awful lot of bloodworms to net $7 million. Can't blame the pier owner, but beach access is becoming more and more difficult for the working man.

Before I bought my boat a couple of years ago I spent many a day for many years fishing Long Beach Pier (and a few since when it was to rough to get out in the boat). It will be missed. No you cant blame Tommy for selling with that kind of money waved under his nose. At least the island still (for now) has 2 other piers. The only 2 campgrounds on the island were also sold for development, now there is no place on the island to camp. Big money and development are changing the hell out of our once wonderful NC coast. So it goes.

Hey fellas, you don't have to convince this guy! I grew up in Myrtle Beach and saw the same thing with condos on the front row. On the one hand, property on the waterfront is becoming too expensive for the common man. On the other hand, the property values (especially those owning trailers), are making some otherwise low income people some VERY good money.
I truly hate that ANY pier has to go. It's one more thing taken away from the kids as well. The game room on the island has been sold, the pier, and who knows what else. Keep taking activities away from kids, and what do you have...
