Default Navy plans sonar test area for NC waters- effect on fishing?

In case you haven't heard, the Navy wants a sonar testing area along NC's coast. They say no effect on marine life. Opponents say big effect on marine life.

Some people blame various instances in the past of beached whales (and other marine life) on sonar testing. I remember a Big Rock tournament not too long ago that coincided with sonar testing, which was blamed by some fisherman for the slow bite.

I don't think anyone is against the Navy or its' intentions. But there appears to be a possibility of negative impact on our fishing and associated economy.

Here are a couple of links for additional info:

More info available via a Google search...

Here's a link to a newspaper article that shares an interview with Capt Joe Shute. He mentions the perceived effect on the billfish bite during the 2004 Big Rock tournament that conincided with sonar testing:

looks like the area covers the Same Old Place seems like they could test the Subs 100 miles off the beach and not 50 miles

There's been a Navy "SOSUS" facility, just north of the Hatteras Lighthouse, for years. But it uses "passive" sonar.

Regards,

Old thread that I thought might be worth mentioning again...

The middle image below shows a map of the overlay of the range over NC fishing areas:

Here's a link to the CCA's take:

Not exactly sure how the proposal is progressing, but another environmental impact study is planned:
