best=north

worst =south to southeast

when the wind is out of the north, it you can hug the beach no matter how hard she blows.

Yeah, outgoing tide combined with a south, southeast, southwest wind makes Beaufort inlet sloppy. Typically, the incoming tide isn't all that bad as long as the wind isn't howling. You can always run down by harkers island and out the drain to Bardens inlet. Bardens is usually a little calmer than Beaufort. I've gone through Bardens many times when Beaufort was hairy.

The last time (about 2 weeks ago) I went out of Barden's the ditch was badly shoaled near bouy 28 and you had to hug the outside. Wear polarized glasses and be careful.

Out of curiosity, when it's too rough to get out of Beaufort Inlet, where are you going to go when you get out of Barden Inlet? Unless your ultimate destination is the Hook.

feralcat, not sure who your question was posed to- but my destination is cape lookout. still learning my way around and want to try both the outside route and thru barden, and do it w/ enough information so the trip is as unexciting as possible!

Occasionally, when the tide is hauling azz out of beaufort inlet with a decent sw wind, it is going to be nasty there. Sometimes the seas aren't that bad once you clear the inlet and rough point. Its just that getting through the inlet then can suck big time. Bardens is just a back-up for me when I don't feel like going through Beaufort.
