Default Saturday Southport Report

We hit the water at 5:15 this morning with a little weather lurking offshore so we hung around and listened to the radio chater before we made a a decision to head out. Needless to say the inlet was very choppy and very close together so we took our time and made it out safley and started trolling at the 90ft mark on a hard bottom.
Before we had our second line out we had our first fish on. Hoping for a Dolphin but the feel was King. Fish to the boat King it was.

We had a feeling it was going to be a king day. Put two rods out and had another on. King again! Then a double one king one barracuda. It went on like this till we headed for the hill. We ended the day with one Dolphin in the box, 10 released Kings, Kept two more kings, three or four Cuddas, had numerous short strikes and went through 3doz Ballyhoo (one King shark attack was fun while it lasted head only) And something Hit my downrigger ball and cut it like a pair of wire cutters.

(Note to self take of all flashy stickers off Pancake downrigger weights.)

All in all a slow Dolphin day but lots of action!!Back to the hill by 2:00pm. Mark

I heard someone say they were catching them off of Holden Beach. It sounded like they were pretty thick. They were catching them somewhere else this morning too, but we were running and I didnt hear exactly where. There was lots of chatter about bait on the radio early this morning like there always is. Bait was every where on Saturday just in front of the water front at Southport. I am sure over the next couple of days it will wash out to the ocean, but Saturday it was in the river.

We also had a great fishing day Saturday. We caught and released a sailfish just offshore of the Cape Fear Sea Bouy.

Hal,
How are you? We were marking alot of fish and the Dolphin were around but the Kings were really thick. We had the boat on auto-pilot all day and we watched the Kings skying on the baits. In the morning when it was overcast B/W was the only thing they would hit. After the sun broke free of the clouds Pink/White and bare Hoos behind the rainbow daisy chains (the ones we used on Tarnolds) were hot. Mark

Our Sailfish was caught on live bait, he hit the bait in the prop wash twice and then turned and ate the short outrigger. We were able to watch the entire process, as I saw the bill and sail out of the water before he hit the first bait. Both rigs were plain (no skirts) with a single pogy.
