DISESTABLISHMENT CEREMONY SET FOR USCG GROUP CAPE HATTERAS
PORTSMOUTH, Va. - A ceremony to disestablish Coast Guard Group Cape Hatteras is scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m. at the Dare County Fessenden Center, followed by the dedication of the John Homan Ball Field.
Speakers for the ceremony will be Rear Admiral Sally Brice-O'Hara, Commander Fifth Coast Guard District, retired Sheriff Bert Austin, and Ann Macarthur of the office of the Governor.
The disestablishment of Group Cape Hatteras is part of a long-term plan of a Coast Guard-wide reorganization being done to more effectively manage the sweeping changes to Coast Guard operations resulting from the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
All Coast Guard operational units in the Outer Banks region will remain, and the Coast Guard will continue to provide the full range of services to the public as always.
During the 1950's, the site where Group Cape Hatteras currently stands, was built up as U.S. Navy Facility Cape Hatteras, tasked with listening for submerged submarine traffic off the coast with an array of SONAR equipment known as Sound Surveillance System, or SOSUS.
In 1982, the Coast Guard took possession of the site. Since then, Group Cape Hatteras has played an active roll in all major missions of the Coast Guard, including homeland security, search and rescue, aids to navigation, law enforcement, environmental protection and response, marine safety, and community involvement and support.###
