Default Seamanship Certified class today

I'm taking the first of 2 certified courses today in Shallotte. 9a-3p then the second is next Saturday. Looking forward to learning more about boating, saftey, knots, seamanship, etc. Did the fishing class on the 5th too.

Half way there. So far so good. A lot of stuff I already new but lots of stuff I didn't. It's put on by the USCG Auxiliary. The cool part is my free boat safety inspection next week and 1 year free membership with Boat US. Next week finishes it up and then the certification test.

Best thing I can suggest is to forget what you thought you knew. Follow the text and know what they teach.

Funny thing is, common sense is at least 50% of boating. Unfortunately it's also something that can't be taught. It's basically the same as driving a car, you've got people like me who actually care about what their doing and considerate of others (on the road 20-30K miles per year for the last 16 years) then you've got the idiots who never learned how to drive to begin with and forgot every word of thier driving manual... How do I get down from this soap box?

Good question, the USCG Auxiliary has a manual called "Boating skills & Seamanship". It is 12 chapters long and 1" thick. I'm taking the 8 course classes but I'll definitely read all 12 chapters. It basically teaches you everything you need to know about boating, practically and legally. Chapters include Which boat is for you?, Equipment for your boat, Trailering your boat, Handling your boat, Rules you must follow, Inland boating, Engines, Knots, etc, etc, etc. This is not some pamphlet you just pick up on the front counter of a marina. There's a ton of info in the manual. The guys teaching my class have been around for MANY years and a couple have got the badges on their chests that are 5 rows deep. They keep it interesting with old war stories. As for insurance, State Farm gives a 10% discount after your certified, others due as well. Plus, like I mentioned above, I get a year of Boat US service and a safety inspection for free. Well worth the $30 bucks I'm paying for the course.

Here's a link to the particular course I'm taking...
