Looking for info and tips.....
I have a buddy who's letting me stay at his families' beach house in trade for doing some easy handyman type work. I hope it turns into several trips this year as I am definetely coming out on the winning end of this deal. A little further to drive but not too bad considering the return.
I have earned a week so far and am taking the family and boat down May 28 thru June 3 and plan on spending several hours each day for 3-4 days doing some fishing, and a few hours dragging the kids on a tube, sightseeing, etc. Gonna have to do other things as well, can't spend the whole time fishing according to the Admiral.
Would prefer to target something the kids could have fun catching rather easily......don't ask for much do I??
Just for me and the Admiral....Are cobia around Murrells inlet that time of year?
Any help appreciated!!!!
Will have to do alot of work and earn me up some weekends for just me and the guys so I can spend all day fishing!

I'm not from that area, but along the NC coast that time of year is prime cobia season. I would suspect they would be out of Murrells inlet since it is the same bay as the southern NC coast. Kings and definitely spanish will be around as well.
There are some close in artificial reefs - one at three miles the other at ten that will hold the occasional cobia. Catch and keep live pogies - menhadden-off the beach and use for bait both on top and down deep. Chum like crazy to attract them. Best on the half tide all the way to slack and then the other way. Hold On!!, and don't boat a green fish.
Thanks for the replies so far.....The Admiral has informed me that we will prolly be sticking to the waterway/inlet with all the kids in the boat. (Closer to bathroom docks) Don't want to take any risks too far out in the big pond. I'll be saving my earned days for a "Guys weekend" to satisfy the outside the jetty urges.
What species could one expect in the inlet?

That time of year should be excellent for drifting slowly across the mud flats dragging a mudminnow on the bottom for flounder. Also - at the jetties fish cut bait up close to the rocks for spottail bass - otherwise known as redfish.
Captain Dick's seems to have the best ramp, a little steep on the launch price, but it's got fresh water and good traction. If you are up for a pleasure ride, jump on hwy 17 south and watch for Wacawatchie (sp?) landing on the ICW. great facility with free launch and plenty of parking, also in fresh water. the ride from there through the sound at georgetown and south to charleston is absolutely beautiful. for good eats, check out the Gulfstream Cafe, inlet view right next door to Marlin Quay Marina. If you like spicey food (new orleans style) check out Flow's Place on business 17, kinda looks like a dump from the road, but the food is great. Avoid the buffet's at all cost.
Thanks for the replies so far....keep 'em coming. Might be going this weekend for the three hour tour of the homestead by one of the family members. Hope to learn the lay of the land and get a good idea for boat ramps, etc.
Thanks SC THT'ers!

Captn' Dicks has a real nice ramp beside of it. It is plenty wide/long and has good parking across the street. If you wanted a good charter there call Captn' Dicks and ask for the Sea Spirit. That old salt knows some holes to find a fish.
We did go this past weekend. I realize this is a late post, but been very busy this week. That is one nice place down there! We ate supper at Lee's Inlet Kitchen...very nice dining....that Shore Dinner is huge! Lots of food and I was able to finish most of it. The family member who took me down is not too big into boating, so we had to scope out everything by just driving around.
Went down to Murrells Inlet proper at low tide and the only ramp I seen that had water was the public access ramp. All the other boats were stuck in the mud....literally!
Not to say there aren't other ramps, but I really liked the looks of the public ramp. I will check out all the other suggestions in the thread when I have more time.
Did cruise the point and seen lots of private ramps behind houses.
Are there any good ramps (even pay) on the point that have water at low tide?
Will be going down again soon to do some work and earn more time.
My buddy knows some drop off the map type shortcuts down there, and we travelled to the house in Garden City Beach SC from Sanford, NC in exactly 3.5 hours.
Thanks again for all the replies!
Scott

Scott, I use that very ramp all the time. It's a great ramp, but be prepared when the weekend warriors are out in full force - it's sticky in the season. Someone owns the small vacant lot across the street and charges $5 for trailer parking - well worth it IMHO, not only for the walk it saves, but that you can usually jump into "line" for retrieval quicker if you are parked there at a busy time.
There are some places to the south to launch if you have a small boat, but otherwise, you need to launch at an actual ramp with a larger boat.
Even if the house you are staying at doesn't have a ramp, you might find that the neighbors does, and there's a 99% chance they'll let you launch and retrieve from theirs. Be careful to do it at high tide if possible - the "personal" ramps tend to have lots of crunchy bottom junk on them, or just below the waterline at low tide.
Shoot me an email or pm when you're coming back down and I'll tell you what's biting at the time.
Also love to get filled on that big stack o' fried food at Lee's!
Scott, we go down once a year with the inlaws, carry the boat and do some fishing.
There is a good reef just a few miles off that we usuly kill the Spanish. It is
N33 31.071 W78 58.140
It only takes about 15 mins to get out there.
Billy
captain billy is right about that reef...& i also second the mud minows slow trolling for flounder.also second the rock jetties going out the inlet fishing with cut bait or shrimp.you can also catch alot of croakers in the inlet very easily on shrimp ..that mey be alot of fast action for the kids.good luck & have fun !!!!
