The inlet is fine, well marked and plenty deep. The run from Silver Lake to the inlet is a little curvey but again well marked. Just make sure you don't accidently skip a bouy on that part of the trip and you will be fine.

Depends on your boat size and the wind. I've seen it smooth as a babies butt and other times it was rockin' and rollin'. Generally speaking, it's not too bad. Point about staying in the channel on the way out from silver lake is well taken.

It's fine and do exactly as Kirk said. Do not miss a buoy and you will be in high cotton. It's actually kind of a fun inlet to run IMHO, cause as you enter the inlet from coming in offshore, the white water and breakers are SW of the inlet right next to the middle set of buoys. At least the breakers used to be there last year. Stop for five minutes and throw a big ass mirrolure into those babies and you may get lucky and catch yourself a big old redfish. I have several times!!

If I were to rate the 3 northern inlets in relation to passage with 1 being a swimming pool of constant depth and 10 being white knuckles it would be like this, Ocracoke Inlet a 3......stay with the bouys and everything should be A-OK, Hatteras I'd give a 5, best to follow a local since there has been some shoaling near the ferry dock and toward the inlet itself according to the duck guide I was with last week, and my favorite, Oregon is an 8 under most conditions and with the shoaling from this latest NE blow, you need to watch your step. Follow one of the charter boats out if you can and have your chart machine set to track your course so you can run the reverse coming back in. There were some boats (private and charter) out today looking for stripers that I could see, and I'd guess that some went to the stream too considering it was slick early in the day.

Ocracoke on an outgoing tide can be tricky if there is a a southeast swell over 4-5 feet offshore. So much water will be pouring through there that it will be breaking all the way across if the swell is more than 5 feet and from the southeast. Just something to keep in mind. You will probably be fine.
