Default Homemade Rod holders

I don't know if this is the right place, but I was wondering if anyone had some ideas for getting some more rod holders off my buddies boat. He has a 17ft whaler and only 2holders on the transom. Just curious if anyone has made some home made devices when they were first getting started.

Does he have a t-top or rails around the center console? Any rails can mount rod holders.

i've made all of mine. i use 1and1/4 and 1and 1/2 pvc.; a quick cheapo way is to drill a 1/4 inch hole at the botton of the pvc pipe and the thru the bulkhead or console. then use a pvc strap from hd or lowes. take to the next notch a holesaw, drill suitable sized holes, cut angles and vary width for a tapered console. larger offshore rods might require a 2 inch pipe. my 24 privateer has 20 spaces around the cunsole and flats boat has 10. notches for spinning reels or a small scallop for the triggers on the casting rods is a nice touch

I've never made any for fishing but I have made some for vertical storage on the side or front of the CC. I just used PVC. I ran a screw thru near the bottom (straight in from the outside) and another screw near the top but just thru the inner wall of the PVC (this one was at a slight angle). When you put the rod in it easily slips past the top screw and the butt end of the rod fits into the bottom screw keeping it from turning.

My last boat was a 17 Whaler. If you're looking for rod holders for fishing, you can mount however many holders you want on the railings. If you're looking for storage, you can fit at least six across the front of the console (if they're not already there).

Thanks for all the idea's guys. I am trying to figure out a rig to pull a couple of trolling lines and two down rigger's that can slide into the two rod holders in the transom? I have seen something like it before just didn't get a good enough look to replicate.
