Default Sea Tow Morehead City ....THUMBS DOWN

I don't make it a point usually to post negatively or even report bad work. However, my experience yesterday with the response time and attitude of Sea Tow Morehead City was so poor that I think others should be aware of what their memberships do not cover.

Been a member for 10 years. Needed assistance yesterday to be pulled off a shallow flat. After being on hold for 15 minutes with Sea Tow...I was told that "operator error" for anchoring in too shallow of water was not covered under membership. I got disgusted, but did not lose my temper and told the captain that if he couldn't help me, that I didn't know why I had been paying dues.

The captain also called me back 10 minutes later to lecture me about how ignorant I was for anchoring there and that he took nothing but pride in his work and that he helped all the time with this type of thing even though it wasn't part of the membership. I guess that he just didn't feel like going out and doing that yesterday.

Check your membership documents and CAREFULLY review what you are covered for.....

I will be cancelling my membership and sending a letter to explain why to Sea Tow.

THIS IS A NEGATIVE VOTE FOR SEA TOW SERVICES IN MOREHEAD CITY.

It would be interesting to hear the other side to this story. I have only needed Sea Tow one time and they did an excellent job.

The time I needed them out of Wrightsville Beach the capt was fantastic. A man of few words, BUT very skilled. He saved my A$$, that is all I care about. Now MH may b e a different story, different capt, different day of the week etc.
Needing to renew soon, I will take this into consideration. I do not think the contract outlines the events leading to how one becomes grounded to be covered. It specifies soft or hard grounding and defines each.
Good Luck.

morehead city is owned by a different operator than the wilmington group. I too have used the wilmington group and they did a great job (got the damn boat off the bar) morehead use to have a 70 yr old capt that cut a mans leg almost off while getting him in the boat, with the motor left ingear. seatow settled and paid out a claim.

In that area Tow Boat US Beaufort is outstanding. Thought I was going to have to use them on Monday but was able to make it back to port on my own. (fuel issue) You can sign up at West Marine in Morehead city. and as long as you have your receipt on the boat your covered.

I hope that the Sea Tow captain also sees this and does post his side of the story.

It would be interesting to me to see how he explains the situation and any differences from my story.

Morehead City Sea Tow is run by a crook! No doubt, it has been seen time and time again. I grew up in the area and worked at the local marinas before college. The Sea Tow group in Wilimington is run by professional mariners. In the Morehead area Tow Boat US is the ONLY way to go. Instead of ending up in court, you will just buy a membership if you dont have one when you call. Beware of SEA Tow Morehead!!!!!

It's disappointing to hear that Sea Tow allows someone with a reputation like this to operate under their name.....

Each franchise is only as good as the person who owns it. Where I boat, both ST and TBUS are great...I chose ST because I have met the franchise owner and know him to be a stand-up kinda guy.
You need to contact ST corporate and lodge a formal complaint. Too many of those and the home office will pull the franchise.
I wonder...there was a situation years ago where ST filed a salvage claim for pulling a SKA boat off a sandbar in the OB...wondering if this is the same franchise.

Very true! My brother had an issue with the previous franchisie here in HR and filed a complaint. He was more than compensated for his trouble.

The current Seatow franchisie here in Hampton Roads is as good as you will find anywhere.

They may not know at HQ what the deal is. But since each franchisee determines how good they are in a given area, info like this makes THT such a "must read" IMO.

Wish this was posted about a week ago. Just renewed my membership with SeaTow last week, and of course I boat of Morehead City. My buddy is a lawyer so ill keep him in mind and hope I dont have to use them.

The only dealing I have had was a fuel issue when I was at the Rise last year. Hailed them and they stayed in touch the whole way (was able to limp in), checking on me about every 30 mins or so. Glad I did not have to use them after reading this.

gypsiegirl must work at SeaTow. I also switched to Tow Boat here several years ago and have been well satisfied when needed. I have their premium membership which also includes dock to dock towing. I keep the boat on a lift and needed the service recently to get it to the marina for repairs. Also if you're a CCA member you get a discount that pretty much covers your membership .

Yes, how come? I am interested too. Before I go down the road of using any service I would like to hear why you are opposed to TowBoat?

It is interesting that your first post is to defend Sea Tow on this particular thread.......

I have had a number of great experiences with ST Beaufort ... once for myself and twice in situations where they went the extra mile to assist folks in very extreme conditions. One fo those situations they received Coast Guard recognition for. I've seen them 40 miles out towing folks as I have with Tow Boat US. I have both because I fish in areas that don't have both. I would not hesitate to call either one.
