Default FIVE RESCUED FROM CAPSIZED VESSELS IN OREGON INLET IN THE PAST TWO DAYS

Oregon Inlet-- For the second day in a row, Good Samaritans
and the Coast Guard pulled fishermen from the surf of Oregon
Inlet after their boats capsized.

Three striped bass fishermen fell into the water after their
18-foot boat was capsized by the wave at about 7:40 a.m.

None of the three was wearing a life jacket.

The men were picked up by other fishermen, and by 7:45 a.m.
they were transferred to a Coast Guard 21-foot rescue boat
from Station Oregon Inlet whose crew was patrolling the area.
The three men were taken to the Coast Guard station. No injuries
were reported.

This was the second incident of a capsized vessel in Oregon Inlet
in two days. Two fishermen were plucked from the water after
their 23-foot SeaFox oveturned Thursday. The two men, fishing
for striped bass near the north shoals of Oregon Inlet, when the
boat was capsized by a wave.

The water in the area is currently between 55 and 65 degrees.
Such low temperatures can be deadly within a matter of hours.

"We highly recommend that fishermen, and all boaters for that
matter, wear their life jackets at all times," said Petty Officer
Michael Dontempo of Station Oregon Inlet. "Life jackets save lives."

The northside of the inlet is always nasty. It shoals up and there are consistant 3+ footers and whitewater was out there recently on a slick calm day and there it was still nasty. The drive to catch a fish striper in the nastiest of water sometimes gets one in trouble.

Having gone through the inlet a few times, I am constantly amazed at the number of smaller boats hanging at the edges of the big water (I know, good spots to fish) but never wearing life jackets . . . the most discouraging thing is seeing them with kids on board and no life jackets

Glad they were rescued and no serious injuries, this time

The inlet is not completely to blame. People like to take too many chances getting to that "perfect" spot to throw that eel when rockfishing. They get into situations that they can't control, they do not keep their eyes on the waves and than Mother Nature does the rest. If they would just use some common sense, these kind of accidents would not happen.

I ran thru the inlet at 5:45 am Saturday on my way offshore and the conditions were perfect. However, it did get a little sloppy once the tide started running out later in the morning I was told.

Happens every year once the rockfish show up on the bar.

I agree with the previous post. In order to fish the shoals at Oregon Inlet you must have a "desiginated driver" that is constantly watching the sea. I was through the inlet about 7:30 am Saturday right after the incident and there was still a little outgoing tide but not really big swells. Wind and seas were flat calm but still some swell over the bar. If 2 boats were lost in these conditions, Please be careful as the season goes on. Looks like there will be plenty of fish again this year,so no need to take risks..
Regards,
dave

PS: Congrats to Kurt Busch and Happy Thanksgiving!
