What did everyone catch this weekend. It was like a parking lot..
We ended up with 2 wahoo on Saturday in the stream and then went bottom fishing on sunday and ended up with a grouper and lots of trigger fish. Felt really stupid though, because upon arriving a the dock with only 3 triggerfish and having thrown 10 back, I think we missed some really great meat. I guess that you can tell that we don't bottom fish much.
Oh, Well.
Great days on the water, It sure was nice to get out there again.

I was out saterday also. Tried trolling around for about 4 hours and only got one dolphin bite, jumped about 10 foot in the air across the spread and came off on another line. Decided to drop to the bottom at Ar 302. Got 7, 3-5 lbs trigger fish, and a couple of spanish hog fish (let them go). Not a real productive day, but it was good to get back out deep! I've always been told that if trigger fish weren't so hard to clean, they'd be extinct! I heard a couple of the big boys switching to bottom fishing and were swapping out tackle to catch some fish, so two wahoos was a good catch saterday....

Here's some from my wife & I's trip Thursday Sept 30, 04
Terrific day at Big Rock. Arrived at the Rock at 8am & fished to 11:30am. We had a triple header on sailfish. Hooked 4 brought 3 to the boat for release. Caught 4 wahoo 28 - 34lbs. The astonishing thing is we caught everything on Yozuri Deep Diving Minnows Orange/White & Blue/Silver. Had 2 ballyhoo teasers way back but neither got touched. Pictures to follow. My wife & I were busy. Water was flat at the Rock 79.4 degrees at the 90 Drop & 81.4 degrees at BR. Notice the Yozuri's stuck in bills of the Sailfish ...... so u don't think I'm blowing smoke!
Fished a 1 mile radius around these coodinates:
N34 09 204 W076 10 827 Caught all the fish trolling to the North at 6.5 mph. Had the Yozuri's on TLD 15's with 20lb Cajun Red Line about 10 - 15 yards off the corners of the stern. There were pods of Hardtails that would sky to get away from the Sailfish. Was one of the one in a million days for sure!

Matt (TigerRag) and I left the the inlet at 7:00 to a confused sea and headed out to the Same Ole Saturday morning. We caught the tail end of the morning bite putting one dolphin in the boat and having a pink and blue tracker with a ballyhoo rigged on 300lb mono cut off by a screamer Hoo. Trolled around and picked up a few smaller dolphin that we released. We stuck to our plan to see if there would be a afternoon bite and we went 2 for 3 on the WaHoo, and picked up a few more dolphin between 3:30-4:30. caught one Hoo on a Yozuri 6" diving crystal minnow (tryied one of bluewaterpirate's tactics),one on a yellow and green Islander Sailure, had one cut off on a Pink and blue tracker, with a swing and a miss on a blue and white Islander Sailure. All in all we had a great day with great company. We got back to the dock right at dark.
Matts 31 Contender ran flawlessly, By the way I beleive it is still for sale on the trading dock. If you are looking for a great boat this is the one!! Tommy we heard you cheering at the State game on the radio!!! Heres a few photos.
Matt With his Wahoo!
Me with one of the Wahoo!
Matts boat crusing home at around 50mph, it was getting late as the sun was low in the sky!

Thanks for the write up Mark. Fun trip offshore! Mark did exagerate just a little bit........we didn't cruise home quite that fast although it was a brisk ride. More like 42-44 depending on the sea state. We did have to move on pretty good because we were losing light fast. We wanted to catch the late afternoon bite and that worked out pretty well for us. Now if we'd just been able to get bait Friday night, we would have been able to make the morning bite as well. Any suggestion on back up places to buy bait around Wilmington/WB anyone? We went to Tex's Fri night, just missed them and Wal-mart didn't have any Ballyhoo's. Any suggestions are appreciated. We had a good trip none the less despite missing the morning bite, snotty east-side of the shoals seas, full moon, and missing a couple screamers.
Glad to hear everyone else had good trips as well. You gotta love fall fishing!

Went out Friday on my boat. Slow day. Had a couple of bite offs early and finally put a 40lb tuna in the box at 2:30pm. Sat we went out with a friend on his 53' and did not get a knock down all day. Pretty days offshore but no fish where we were.

Thanks guys for the suggestions on places to get bait. Went by West Marine and they were closed, so I figured Boaters World would be closed too. I'll keep all the others in mind too for next time.

Fished 18Mile Rock Sat. There were several tournament boats there. One boat in particular looked like a 50 foot Buddy Davis. Very nice boat. Looked easily in the range of a cool mil. But I didn't see him boat any fish. Bait was everywhere. Schools of Bonita, according to the radio, were all around at 18 miles. My live well pump quit working and all the pogies, except for 2, that I worked so hard to catch that morning died. So did I trying to catch them.
I really need to improve my Hoo rigging so I feel more confident pulling them and so I have a backup when the bait don't show up or whatever.
I did catch one teenage king and limited out on black bass. I think I hooked a grouper, but it was on my king rod and I couldn't get the drag set to get him up. It didn't fight like a shark as it went straight down and stayed there. Tried thumbing the reel, but it finally broke the 20 pound line.
Took my nephew out Sunday and caught 15 more black bass. There were lots of kings and fish caught at the Lighthouse Sat and Sunday.

Alternative to dead bait: do you ever use Sabiki rigs? I've used 'em for live cigar minnows, blue runners, small black bass (for the downrigger), and, of course pin fish (use scissors to cut off the top fin)
