I'm afraid I am going to throw this thread off topic for a moment.
In regards to UNC. I like Bunting (this coming from a state fan). He seems like a nice guy. He is not what UNC needs. IF Carolina could attain a great coach, what would keep them from becoming a contender? Assume Spurrier was offered a job in Chapel Hill (I don't think this will happen...think he is going to USC). Why wouldn't recruits flock to UNC?
1. Big name coach
2. Nice campus
3. Nice stadium
4. The name of the school (as much as I hate to say it)
I think the only downside would be people saying that football will always be the second sport in Chapel Hill.
Sorry to go off topic. Hopefully the AD (Baddour?) will continue to do a crappy job with the football program and the State fans can continue to give UNC a hard time!

OK. Let's divide the ACC up into tiers: top 3, middle 5, and bottom 3 - is that fair? Miami and Virginia are in the top 2 spots, and you aren't going to shake that tree. That leaves State in direct competition for that final spot with FSU, MD and maybe Virginia Tech, who could easily win the next 4.
Honestly, I don't see y'all beating out all of those three teams, which would leave you...as one of the better, middle-pack ACC teams, as I said.
Last year you *had* a good QB, and still went 7-5, or 6-5 if you throw out the cupcake. A big improvement from where you were with Mike 0', but you're not a top-10 program, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Sooner or later Clemson will rise out of the cesspool, (maybe), and Carolina really won't stay awful forever (maybe!!), and when those programs wash off, they'll be trouble, as well as GaTech, MD and Wake.
I have to concede to a couple of your points...Va and Miami are at the top of the food chain this season, BUT - where was VA last season? Middle of the pack? 2nd tier? Is this ranking relative to the season? or is it a program ranking that is measured over time?
State is not there yet, I agree, but there are certain things that accompany a description like 2nd tier. Maybe it is just a play on words that we are disagreeing about...so I will let it die.
As far as Spurrier coming to UNC, bring it, don't sing it!! I agree, I don't think he will. I don't think he will be at USC either....My thought is Texas, after Mack chokes again this Saturday, he will be out, and Spurrier can step right in to something that he does not have to rebuild. A process he would have to go through at UNC for several years and to some extent at USC.
Spurrier is too cocky to play second fiddle to Roy Williams, and too cocky to be at USC where outside of South Carolina the name USC stands for University of Southern California and the name Carolina means UNC. LOL.
Not meant to be a stab at USC, it is simply the truth, and Spurrier is a "me" guy.

I totally agree. No way he will come to Carolina. Just using him as an example.
This is kinda off subject, but have any of you saw this new North Carolina State basketball recruit play high school ball. I hear he is a great prospect and will help NCSU with their size. He was highly ranked in high school basketball players across the country.
Cedric Simmons
height : 6-9
weight : 216
position : Center/Forward
hometown : Shallotte, N.C. West Brunswick High
We have had two good years of BB recruiting. This year Simmons, Brackman, and Grant will be freshman. I've heard good things about all three. Brackman I think will play both basketball and baseball. Our next class consists of three four star recruits. Courtney Fells, Brandon Costner, and Ben McCauley make up the class of 2005. One thing about Herb is he is one heck of a recruiter. If these players can perform up to their potential, we could be hard to beat over the next few years. All that being said, I am always a little skeptical towards the ratings these high school kids recieve.
I think that we play very differnt basketball than other schools and we are scared to change that slow paced offence we have, therefore I would love to see an already developed coach come take over that has a better offensive plan. Allthough Herb kinda did a little better with his offense last year. Can't wait for the season to begin... I think that NCSU may have a harder time this year than last....
My Preseason ACC Basketball Rankings:
Wake Forrest
UNC
NCSU
Duke
Maryland
GA Tech
Florida State
Virginia
Miami
Clemson
VA Tech
I kind of like Herb. I think he gets a bad rap for being kind of a quiet guy. People forget the shape the program was in when he arrived here. Back then we were basically holding tryouts on campus with Les Robinson. The offense is definately different with a lot of motion. If we can't get into some kind of rhythm, we usually struggle. We have been consistently good on defense under Sendek. The ACC is going to be VERY tuff this year. As always in the preseason, there are a lot of unanswered questions. That being said, this is how I would rank the acc....probably not even close in the long run.
1. Wake- nobody left last season. incredible returning players, paul is awesome.
2. UNC- hate to say it but the tarheels are going to be hard to beat with the returning Felton, McCants, May, and company.
3. Georgia Tech- Paul Hewitt is a great coach. Returning talent and incoming freshmen should win them some ball games.
4. NCSU- I hope the wolfpack can win it all but I see that as a tall task without the senior leadership of Sherrill and Melvin. I hope to see a lot of heart out of the young kids.
5. Duke- When Duhon didn't play last year, the offense looked kind of rough. If somebody doesn't step up, Duke could lose a lot of ball games.
6. Maryland- Gilchrist is an awesome player, as well as Caner-Medley. Probably deserve a higher ranking than 6 but my hatred of Maryland athletics will not allow it.
7. FSU- Could be the sleeper of the group. They should make the NCAA's this year.
8-11. Virginia, Miami, Clemson, Va. Tech
Hope I don't get flamed for these picks. This is the reason I'm a horticulturalist and not an ESPN analyst.
open tryouts? C'mon man!! I was there under the LESS Robinson years and I have to say that we had some outstanding players (I thought) during those years, I remember having my heart broken 6-7 times a year with last second losses, especially in the ACC regular season....but open tryouts, lol. I know that was just to prove a point but, I have to defend some of the fellas here... Tom Googs, Todd Fuller, Oshua Benjamin, we were not deep but had some ballers.
I hope that the recruiting class is good...if it is, it kinda goes against my argument to get rid of Sendek....here was the thought pattern.
Sendek plays 1943 Princeton Style basketball, there is not a kid in the state that wants to come to NCSU and scratch and claw in the ACC to lead the team with 12 ppg. It is just not a style that is sexy enough to get the ballers in.
That said, I was happy that we did so well last year, but it was bittersweet, b/c I thought that Herbie did enough to keep his job, well he did more than that.

We have about the same picks...I am a die hard NCSU basketball fan as you can see...did not miss a game in 2004 on television even went to a few games.
I think the key to our season is the play of Watkins, Bennerman, and our Georgetown transfer. One of these men have to average high scoring numbers. Hodge and Evtemov (hell I think thats close..lol) will get there numbers I belive...but who else will step up to the plate and average over 10 points a game.....My sleeper this year on the team is Bennerman...I think he has great potential to be a star....Flyer type that does alot of dunking and great plays. Maybe Collins will become a little more athletic this year and have some good rebounding numbers.
My starting five for the pack this year I have 2 I think Herb will use...
No. 1
PG - Bethel (think thats his name "Georgetown transfer")
SG - Hodge
SF - Evtemov
PF - Simmons
C - Collins
No. 2
PG - Bethel
SG - Bennerman
SF - Hodge
PF - Evtemov
C - Simmons
FELLAS!!!!!!! STOP The INSANITY!!! we sound like UNC fans talking about basketball in OCTOBER!!! LOL....
I did just receive a sickening email from Mark Packer (hopefully you guys get to listen to his radio show from time to time) the all time record between State and UNC in football is 60-27-6 UNC.
I am sick....the most recent 12 games is 8-4 UNC....OK, I am going to vomit now. I thought for sure he was quoting me our women's soccer record....hoping anyways.
Wolfpack 24

the 10 point spread is scary, I think it is a sucker bet to take us and the points this weekend.

I like your starting lineups. Bennerman should definately pick up some slack this year. You are right, he is a very athletic player. If you head up to any games this year, PM me and we could meet.
Trim Tab-
The point spread is 10? I never know how to feel about these games. Our defense hasn't been tested by a "passing offense". OSU, Va. Tech, and Wake are all primarily run teams. It will be interesting to see how our secondary fares with Durant throwing the ball all over the place.
I know we sound like Tarheel Fans waiting on Basketball talking about it very early because thier Football team never seems to be anything to hoot and rant about....LOL
Really I think the pack should handle the Heels just fine and dandy this weekend. Anyone going to the ECU-NCSU football game this year. Maybe the fans and students can control themselves so they can play for many years to come....LOL. I may be heading up there for that game....if my tickets come through as promised...
wolfpack03, I think the VaTech game may (read hopefully) offer an preview of how we handle Durant. 10 sacks! I think Manny Lawson is going to have his usual awesome game which means Durant will be looking at that Carolina blue sky after most plays. We also have a local lad*on the defensive unit, #72 Tank Tyler. The cooler weather is going to be a plus. The temp/humidity at C-F were terrible Saturday.
Go Pak!*

Manny Lawson is a great player. Awesome speed and jumping ability for such a big guy. Hopefully he and Mario will spend most of the evening in the backfield with Durant.
You are right about Saturday. It was HOT! I think I got partially dehydrated. By the end of the game I had a nasty headache from all of the screaming and heat. I love the night game at the end of October and November. Cooler temps and the crowd always seems a little more rowdy.
Jeez!!! One touchdown!!?? You know, there's likely to be more red in the stands than blue or - that other Carolina football fan color - silver. We'll play 'em for the whole game like we've played everybody else this year in the third quarter.

I like your score WAY better than mine!!! But, this game is usually close and we are coming off of 3 very emotional games...OSU, Va Tech (whew) and WF (whew whew).
If we do not come out flat, which is a big concern, I think we will be fine. The team that has won the rushing game in this series has historically won the event...I like our chances, but I think it is a close one.

In an ugly, offensive game that will include 5 turnovers (3 by State, including a critical TA fumble), maybe a safety....
At least I hope so. It's a travesty this game isn't on "real" TV. I'm not about to spring for digital cable to pick it up, especially if I have to shell out $25 to ShipStore.
Carolina absolutely SUCKS!!! They couldn't beat a decent highschool team right now. I hope Spurrier uses them like a cheap rug - like Beamer did a few years back ("Thanks for the extra million!").
State 45
Carolina 0
