Default Lake Gaston Rock Fish

Just wondering if anyone on here fishes Lake Gaston. I've read a lot about striper fishing on Kerr and Jordan Lakes, but nothing about Gaston. I'm thinking it might be fun to give it a try this fall. Can anyone suggest any techniques and/or locations to find some stripers?

Fished last weekend on Gaston, first time. Trolled umbrella rigs (2) about 2-3 miles from the dam on the east end. Caught 2 striped ones at 6 lbs each right around 4:30 pm. Very good eating. I think we where right west of the # 3 buoy. The trick was the umbrella rigs tried bucktails up and on downriggers with no avail.

Capt Rick,
You catch them all deep on downriggers?

Just flat lined umbrella righs with a trolling weight. I did not have to use the downriggers.

Leew611,

Gaston has some BIG stripers in it, but it's not known for numbers of stripers. I've fished there seven or eight times. Had decent luck, mostly one or two fish per trip. I always fished live bait--whatever I could catch meaning gizzards, herring or threadfins. I hear from locals that herring are the preferred bait.

I have a friend who has a place on Gaston. He trolls there a lot using longlines with bucktails or 1oz. Hotspots. Seems to catch fish.

I once saw a guy land a 26lber. He was fishing from a pontoon boat and chased that fish for about twenty minutes before he netted him. I guess he was using light line.

Good luck
