I just use actual charts. I have 3 framed, 2 in my office and one in my brothers living room. They actually look pretty good. I know this because that is what I have been told by people who know this sort of thing. I have no decorating ability!
I've got some of the actual charts that I intend to eventually frame. I bought from Neuse Sport Shop in Kinston. I've also seen paper charts at West Marine in Morehead City.
I agree with the above -- get the actual charts, and get them framed. I have a couple large ones in my office (btw, Beaufort Inlet is '11545'), but I went cheap, and just had them dry-mounted to styrofoam....
I'd get the chart catalog for the East Coast, and pick out a couple you like. Don't neglect to get "Chart 1", which is free, in addition to the catalog, which is cool because it has all the symbols and markings and abbreviations, and even if you're the oldest salt on water, you still might see something new.
Also, West Marine and Boater's World, and probably regional tackle stores, will carry charts for the area.
I have a LOT of maps down here in my basement. So many that I dont wanna think about the cost of framing them,
as most are lots larger than the usual frame size. I have a 4' x 6' of N.C. Another 2' x 3' of all the shipwrecks off our coast.
And a 2' x 3' satellite photo of Hurricane Fran in infrared.
The prize is a 6' x 8' of America. And yes, it cost a LOT just to get it laminated
Having anything 'professionally' framed is just too expensive to consider...unless it was yer wife nude in her twentys
i bought a satalite photo of coastal NC OBX at the sanitary fish market in Morehead a few years back.** Looks great on the wall.** You can see the bridges and major buildings.

I took a new chart, dipped a tea bag in some water and washed over it. Then took and drew in some plot lines and other odds and end notations with a pencil. This gave it a nice old map look. Looks great framed.

My favorite is the coast and geodetic survey map #1229--Currituck Beach Light to Wimble Shoals. Back in college, I had the 1966 edition taped to the wall in my dorm room. Now, I have a more current edition mounted to a foam backing board hung in my office. It makes for some great daydreams.
Shag,
thats an awesome picture, wonder where you could get one big enough to frame?
A Contractor in Raleigh had one hanging on his wall. I can't remember where he got it. I have one similar that is the whole state of NC that came from the Smithsonian. You may want to check their website.
Greg--Boaters World is a sales agent for government charts and should have one. I bought the same chart at Boaters World last fall and had it mounted as a Christmas present for my son .I think it cost about $50 to have my frame shop mount it on a foam back. For me, charts also make great souvenirs. I have a chart of Key West over my computer at home and a Hilton Head chart at work. Hilton Head came from the Shelter Cove marina and Key West came from a really neat Key West hardware store that even gave me a free tube to protect the chart on the flight home.
I've got one framed and its probably about 20'' x 30" or so. I think it came from a gift shop in Nags Head and I think the Wright Bros Memorial used to sell them too.
