does anyone head down to the coast to fish for the day then head back home? I plan on running down from Raleigh this fall and wanted to know if anyone else would be interested in going as well. I have a 19 foot CC so inshore and sound bound.
Where are you planning to launch????? EST time from RAL????? I might could be persuaded to join you one day..... Weekday or weekend????? One of the joys of self employment is taking a day during the week. less crowds and traffic......
I run down and back to Beaufort/Morehead in a single day, from time to time, and the way the conditions have been (kinda crappy) I probably will in the near future, rather than blow a bunch of money on place to stay for long weekends.
One problem is, a lot of fish, or fishing spots, are really good early. I'm sick of catching spanish mackeral, for example, but many times I've seen a hot bite in the inlet completely shut down 1/2 hour after sunrise. Or, during the summer, some popular AR's get mobbed during they day, while if you can get there reasonably early, you have a decent chance of catching a dolphin or king. That's a pretty big handicap, unless you're hitting the road at 3 or 4am, which makes for a bleary trip back home on 70.
Let me get a couple of weeks closer to Oct so I know more about my calendar and I'll shout at you........... Leaving Apex, I could shoot across 64 from 85 and be on your doorstep in about 70 minutes or so, without a boat that is.......

In an airplane! When I lived in Cary I would go to CLT to visit my Mom. I could never make it in less than 2 hr and 45 min. But that was to the south side of CLT, 30 min from Concord Mills Mall. Didn't much like the 64 - 85 route either.
Capt Rick,
I'll pull the Albe to Swansboro and go out of Bouge Inlet. It's a better pull from here than to EI. Post up when you want to go although it will probably have to be a weekend for me.
I traveled Hwy 70 for years. This summer I changed routes and even though it is about ten miles longer, it is faster and not near the hastle. I shoot down 40 to the Magnolia/Kenansville exit (about 4 miles past warsaw). Then I take 24 all the way up to AB. Sometimes I can make the trip in 2 1/2 hours. The only hangup is in Jacksonville.....that can be a pain in the backside. It sure beats Clayton, Goldsboro, Kinston, New Bern and Havelock.

Wolfpack03, I'll try that....I've taken I-40, the Warsaw exit and 24, before, but only when going to Emerald Isle, or Bogue inlet -- not the other end (ie, Morehead City). One kicker is, I keep my boat off Hwy101, which I get on in Havelock, but that's a two lane road, and I always seem stuck behind a logging truck, or slow RV, or something and can't pass, so I end up taking 70 into MC anyway, and driving through Beaufort half the time.
Heh. I remember when -- and I'm not *that* old, just 39 -- there WAS no I-40, and everyone had their own special way to get to the coast. Kinda fun.
Hey Capt. Rick,
I plan on doing a few trips on weekends and during the week.
I'm getting close to getting the Albie ready for the water.
I have to complete some wiring after I find someone to weld a little stainless for me.
I hope to be ready in 10 days.
Let me know when you're heading down and I'll try to meet up.
I go quite a bit I normally put out in Swansboro and fight the Bogue Inlet breakers. I usually make weekend trips but am planning some weekday trips to get in between the hurricanes since it seems they keep coming around the weekends. I went last weekend and caught four kings but took a beating. Let me know when you go. Hey wolfpack we started a new route out of Raleigh. We take 264 east go around Wilson and down 58 and come in the back of Kinston. Seems to be a little better than the old 70. Oh well just my .02

It's really none of my business, but a day trip to Wilmington / Wrightsville Beach from Raleigh seems like it would be much easier than a trip to Morehead / Atlantic Beach. I would think the trip would be less than 2 hours with cruise-control on the whole way.
But I suppose it depends on what you want to fish for and/ or which waters you prefer. I realize that blue water is probably farther offshore down south, but the easier road trip would be awfully tempting if I traveled from Raleigh.
You are right on with that. I have made it to Wilmington in much less than two hours on many occasions. It is definately an easy ride.
I did the 264 to 58 route when I visited the kencraft factory. That was a nice ride as well. I like changing directions to change up the scenery. Hwy. 70 got so boring to me that I just had to find something different.
Wilmington makes a lot of sense if you're towing. You can get from anywhere in the state on I95, or I85 to I40 to Wilmington without one stoplight. Seems like a new light or three every time down 70.
Rick,
I'm in Apex also and was planning on some day trips my self. I can arrange my schedule to fit most anything that works. Give me a holler when your thinking about it.
If you are going to Morehead try staying on I-40 and taking 55 across to Kinston. Its about 10 miles further but there are 3 stoplights vs. 54. Not a good road during school bus time though.
