Low light conditions at 8:30pm and the yacht had no running lights?

That first pic makes me think the ferry hit the yacht. Looks pretty bad.

Where is the "no light" comment? Not in the article that was linked above.

Glad nobody was hurt.

Around Cape Fear, these ferries run wide open....... 25 mph +. I think if I was on the ferry, I would have gotten whip lash and started looking for a boat upgrade.....

It looks like the ferry had just left the dock (app 10 minutes) and the yacht crossed in front of the ferry. Impact appears to be to the port side of the yacht. Looks like the yacht crossed at almost a 90 degree angle.

OK captains, which vessel is the stand on vessel?

No why would a slow trawler think it could beat/cross in front of a ferry? Kind of hard to miss those ferries.

If the ferry actully was the one hitting the other boat, which it sort of looks like, then I would have to say the ferry is at fault. Prolly many circumstances that could change that.

Default Ferry Speed

That ferry runs about 10 mph. It takes 2hr and 20 mind to make the 23+/- mile trip to Ocracoke. I just rode it about a month ago.

depending on depth the ferry could be considered (restricted by draft) and have the right away in the channel.

Those ferrys are big as a small ship. Dont know what the books say but my book says the ferry has the right away against a 35' boat.

also, correct me if i'm wrong, doesn't the smaller vessel (in the case the yacht) have to yield to the larger one (the ferry)?

The more maneuverable -- which is usually the smaller vessel and in this case would be -- has to yield to the least maneuverable vessel.

That leads me to think the Ferry probably had the right of way -- without any obvious particulars to the contrary.
