Would help if you listed a boat type and cruise speed. Guessing you are talking about Cape Fear, right? Your map link won't let me zoom out to see exactly were you are.

I am guessing you are referring to DC on OI close to the condos on 64th street? If so cruising 30 mph, you would be about 7 - 9 minutes.

If you are referring to the tackle store by the bridge and you are wanting to know the time from the OI bridge to the shipping channel, 3 - 5 at the 30 mph rate.

You only really have 3 spots, one is the bridge by Charlie Perry's place, one is the South Harbor Marina and the other is the Southport Marina.

FWIW, The SP marina one is into effect all the way down past the fishy fishy resturant, where the pilot house boats are yet nobody usually slows much there once they pass the marina.

Where are the signs?

When you come in from the ocean, the first sign is on the poles to the right of the new Atlantic Seafood Bar at the end where the USELESS condos on the point are.

all the way past SP marina.

Not posted very will but they don't enforce it much in-between the 2.

I've seen the new no wake sign @ Atlantic Seafood Bar....what makes it "official" ? (I'm thinking the only "real" NW signs are installed by Coast Guard ?)

There is a "no wake sign" posted in the ICW by the Atlantic Seafood Bar. As you're heading south on the ICW it's on starboard side right before the bar. The is not a sign posted any more at the other end by Southport Marina. FWIW, both wild life and coast guard slow down in front of the marina, then pick up speed again to the basin (by Provison Co) then slow down again. Heck, there's not even an official no wake sign by South Harbor. But I believe it's just common courtesy to slow down in these places.

Back to the original question though. If you're heading out to sea via Cape Fear, either stick to the shipping channel or hug the east end of Oak Island to the light house. Shooting in between the two is bad because of the Jay Bird Shoals. At low tide there's an island visible and likely just a foot or so deep at high tide.

I see many boats just rip through that area from Atlantic Seafood Bar to the bridge. I slow down at all the spots mentioned. If there is any area where I see boats being snagged by CC or Marine Patrol its in this area. Not sure if they are pulling them over for not observing the No Wake signs, alcohol or random checks. We thought mostly they were checking for alcohol. One day they were grabbing every one in that area. They went from one boat to another. They rode up beside us and waved. We figured they saw our water bottles and we were wearing our PFD's so they let us ride on by. We thought, wow, what was different about us to let us ride on by???

I have been through the area Drug Runner is talking about. We went out Lockwood Folly and came in the Cape Fear River. My depth gauge started acting up for some reason and we were lucky a couple other boats where heading in before us. So we followed them. I had heard about the shoals and saw them that day. Is that area always passable between the shoals and Oak Island and about how wide is the passable part of that area??? That was my first time out in the ocean in my own boat that day. I was glad as hell to get through that area and into the river with no problems thats for sure!!!!
