Default Recommended Charter Boat out of Emerald Isle area?

I am looking to take my son and his best friend deep sea fishing late spring/ early summer. This is for a special occasion...graduation gift.

We live, boat and fish on the Great Lakes. I have been out in the gulfstream as a kid quite a few years ago and realize that there is nothing really like it.....but it has been quite a while.

I have been telling these kids about saltwater fishing for a long time. Now they are really chomping at the bit to get out there....and there time is coming!

Can anyone recommend a good charter service out of the Emerald Isle area?

It appears that most of the charters go out of the Beauford Inlet area. It also appears that late May to early June is a good time for a pretty big cross section of fish....dolphin, wahoo and maybe even a yellowfin or two.

Any recommendation or other information will be much appreciated! These guys are pumped about this trip, and have been talking about this since Thanksgiving. I really want to show them a good time that they will never forget!!!!!

I highly suggest you drive to MHC and charter a boat there. The run tot he stream is shorter from there and you have a nice selection of boats to choose from. I know Capt Tony Ross and I would suggest you fish with him.

Thanks Triple Crown. Much appreciated! How do you feel about the time frame that I currently have in mind....late May to mid-June? Is mid-June typically better? Jim

Stream fishing late May to mid June is on fire. That time of year, you have a legitimate shot at big dolphin, wahoo, sails, and marlin. I recommend getting up with Second to None charters out of MHC. The name speaks for itself.

As for late May vs. mid June...fishing is pretty similar. I might lean toward mid June just because the weather is typically more stable with milder winds. Both are great times to fish.

I agree with the summary of the dates above.

Thanks for the info NC State. Very helpful information in planning the time frame. Do you think we should go stream all day of take an option for 1/2 and 1/2....offshore/inshore?

What might be hitting inshore in that time frame....say mid-june?

That may be a moot point if the fishing is hot in the stream in that timeframe....but I am curious about the inshore possibilities.

Thanks - Jim

There are a number of excellent charters out of MHC and Atlantic Beach. I have fished with Shane of secondtonone and I'd recommend him highly. Matter-of-fact, I'm still pictured on his website with a Wahoo that I caught in April a few years ago. One of these days I hope to go again to see his new ride, the Fight'n Lady. It's a beautiful 60' boat that a friend of mine designed and built, I doubt I'll ever be able to afford it.

As far as 1/2 day in 1/2 day out, I'd leave it up to the captain. Just tell him your up for it if he thinks it's a good idea.

BTW, depending on exactly where you are in EI, it's about a 1/2 hour drive to the docks.

another vote for Secondtonone, Capt Shane is super nice and will put you on the fish. You won't find a better outfit anywhere.

For inshore fishing (reds, spec trout, flounder) I recommend Capt. Jeff Cronk and Capt. Mike Taylor at http://www.nccharterfishing.com/fishn4life.html

Hope you have a great trip!

If you are interested in fishing the stream, I would book the full day offshore charter with Second to None. Given the long run, it's asking too much to fish the stream AND inshore on the same day. If you're interested in coupling a nearshore and inshore trip, then book a trip with Mike Taylor or Jeff Cronk (referenced above). Those boys are the best at the inshore/nearshore game in the area.

To answer your question, nearshore you can expect large numbers of spanish and king mackerel, possible cobia, lots of AJ's, possible nearshore dolphin, lots of flounder & sea bass on the live bottoms, etc. Inshore you can expect a good bite of red drum, black drum, some flounder, and maybe a trout or 2.

I personally would book the full day stream trip with Second to None and enjoy a day of catching big dolphin, wahoo, and billfish! The stream bite is really impressive that time of year.

I would plan on not going out June 14-19, as that's the Big Rock. It's a good time to be down there to see some nice fish caught, but most of the good charters will be busy fishing that week. The week on either side of it though will be good fishing though. Lots of dolphin, yellow tails, etc to be had then. I would just go down to the Beaufort docks to arrange a charter. Several good boats with good captains down there.
