Yes, it's clear that rec vs comm requirements are totally different. And don't mean to derail your thread. But...

Westco, I can't really make out what you're saying with the post regarding the 20 mile limit. First thing to look at is whether the vessel is documented or state registered. After that, size of the vessel. Then the area it's operating in is next. All three of those things determine what 'stuff' is required.

Heres what I found out for UNDOCMENTED vessels FWIW: 0-12 miles-if your boat is less than 36' and has positive floatation as referred to in 33 CFR 183, no raft required. From 12-20 miles raft required BUT it may be a life float in replacement of a raft.

Good luck if you come down this way, this fall, so far has been terrible weather wise.

More than 12 miles offshore comm fishing and you need an IBA, for most of the small boats. If you have a larger sportfisher you don't need one.
