We have a unique situation in the Beaufort Inlet at this time of the year. This was a major factor as to why we picked this date for our tournament. If you noticed the wind has had N and E in it for the last 3 weeks, except for 2 or 3 days.
An East, ENE, NE wind is prevalent this time of the year. We have a natural barrier called Shackleford Banks that protects OBO tournament fishermen from the elements.
A little bit of history.
In 2001, our first tournament, the wind blew N/E over 20 MPH. Sorry Excuse was fishing an 18 ft. Jon boat at the Rock Jetty. David caught a money fish, got on the VHF and called the entire fleet in to join him. Most of the money fish were caught that day in the area of the Rock Jetty. That was a Sportsmanship gesture that could be repeated tomorrow. David fishes with me, if we are fishing the banks and find fish, David will be permitted make the same VHF call again on channel 68.
For the inexperienced tournament angler: That particular morning the temps were in the 40s with a wind chill in the high 20s. 20 boats braved those elements to fish for KIDS. We raised over $7000 for the Take A Kid Fishing Foundation. The numbers are accurate, 26 boats and $7,000. We sure welcomed the sun that morning to warm us up.
In 2004 they called for over 20 MPH winds and we fished. Walter Giesey of Jacksonville, NC on the 23 Class boat, Miss Mercy caught a 31.04 king to win the tournament at the Barge Wreck. 2nd was 23 Class, Hit N Run with a 29.6, 3rd was G Sea with a 28.84, 4th Fix N 2, 27.5, 5th 23 Class, Four Day Break, 25.32. Most, if not all the boats in the tournament, fished the Dead Tree Hole, Bardens Ledge, the Rock Jetty, Old Sea Bouy, Shipping Channel, Shipping Terminal and AR 315. The bait is in this area and so should the kings be here.
Lines in the water at 7 AM, including jigging lines. The scales are open at Caspers Drystack Marina from 2 to 5 PM.
Come join us and FISH FOR KIDS. Someone is going to win it, might as well be you."
