I will be moving down for 2 years, looking for some advice on good areas to live & fish. I am looking to rent mid sized home 2000sqft+/-, near fishing & in a low crime area.
-I need access to the north side of Cooper River, about 20 miles inland. I dont mind a 45 min or so commute.-
I have some prelim info on homes in Mount Pleasant... it looks nice from google, but one can't really tell.
What kind of fishing are we talking about around there? How for offshore for the big stuff, tuna mahi & the like. Hows the back bay fishing? Trying to plan on what type of boat is required for the area...
look at some of the neighborhoods in MP that have their own boat landings as the public ones are full.
Creek fishing will offer redfish, trout and flounder.
the harbor will offer spanish, jack and the above in the summer.
Offshore fishing is 45+ miles from the end of the harbor jetties.
Thanks, thats what I was pushing for boat wise. I was looking at a 21 Carolina skiff CC or a re-fitted 21 Shamrock CC. The Shammy would be for nearshore & bay stuff if the nearshore shore stuff was within 20 miles, if not, the skiff will do. I guess its a skiff for me, I've been looking for an excuse to get one for my home waters on the Susky Flats...
I am guessing there is a bunch of shallow water & flats fishing going on down there??
Any Cobia swimming around the nearshore structure?
A shamrock CC wouldn't be my first choice for that area given all of the shallows. You can do an awful lot in that area with something like a 22' Pathfinder bay boat... near shore kings and cobias on nice days, big drum near the jetties, jacks in the harbor, reds/trout/flounder in the creeks etc. If you're looking to fish bluewater you need to man up with something pretty seaworthy given the 50ish mile run.
Mount Pleasant is nice. Sounds like you are on the right track.

Thanks for the info... sounds like there some good year round fishing in the area.
After checking commute times, MP is around an hour from the work site. I guess traffic is tough around there?
Moncks Corner is closer & seems nice? Any good/bad parts of that area to look out for?
I see there are landlocked stripers on that lake, being from MD I can handle them... how big do they get on the lake?

Meh.. we take a 17 sea hunt 40-50 off all the time
That shamrock would be perfect in the shallows. Yeah it draws 2 feet, but the keel will protect your running gear so you can just plow through when it gets low. Plus it will be great in the harbor when it gets choppy or running near shore
You can fish a lot closer than 45 miles too. There is a ton of nearshore (within 20) to do with live bottom and artificial reefs. But if tuna and other bluewater pelagics are your thing, then it is a 50 mile run from the jetties, give or take
Charleston is one of my favorite places on the planet, best of luck with the move.
