Hello everyone, we are getting ready for our annual OBX vacation to Corolla.
Over the years I've always wanted to do some deep sea fishing and this year my wife and I are looking at prices out of Pirate's Cove. They offer two type of charters.. Off Shoe and Near Shore and the question(s) I have....
The last week of Aug/first week of Sept how is the fishing. I know a lot depends on it but over all... is this time of year OK? Will it be worth it? The last thing I want to do is drop a lot of money for a just a boat ride.
Also, can anyone shed some light on the Near Shore fishing? The web site said from the inlet to 15 miles out. How much fishing is done on the inlet? If we do this, we want to be in the ocean. Also the Near Shore offers an afternoon trip.. something like 11-5:30, how well is the fishing that time of day in this area?
Thanks for the help... it has BEEN years since deep sea fishing with my dad and it was always in FL and Bahamas. Not that I know about those areas more... just where I have fished years ago.
If you want to go to the gulfstream, you will need to book the all day trip. I often fish nearshore out of Pirates Cove with my young son (on our boat), and we see the half day charters out there with us almost every time. We do not go past the five mile mark and usually stay within three miles. The half days will venture further out that time of year in hopes of some kings, but they focus on the inlet (and along the beach) to the 3 to 5 mile mark. You can ask the half day charters to go out to catch some Amberjacks around the 10 mile mark and they will do so, I believe. As for the half day afternoon trips . . . we have fished more afternoons this year than in past years and have done really well in the afternoons. However, you have to watch for the afternoon thunderstorms. Hope this helps as far as the nearshore issue.
Offshore if you can go Arch Bracher - Pelican.---legend
Inshore near shore If hes not booked open boat Aaron Kelly - Rock Solid.--is usually booked solid with 90% being returning customers, that should tell ya somen. www.rocksolidfishing.com,
If you book any of the "near shore" boats on a half day other than an open boat, you'll be trolling around catching blue fish .5 mile from the dock, and shelling out 600 for what you could have done off any pier, biggest joke on the beach. but they have to bc of the time it takes to go further on just a half day
Check the boats websites for their reports, and you'll get an idea of what they target on half day trips vs full day trips.
here are some "near shore boats"
Poacher
Sea Hunter- Pirates Cove
Fishnfool
Pay little money, catch little fish. Pay big money and go further, catch bigger fish. That's the name of the game generally out of here and if waking up is an issue tell her that she can go back to sleep when she gets on the boat in the morning. It will be worth it. If you're staying in Corolla you may need to get up earlier than 4!
Pelican
Trophy Hunter
Qualifier
Point Runner
These are some good boats to start off with....good luck
August/September will be dolphin and billfishing mostly.
Do the gulfstream trip, you will also see other things that will keep the wife really happy.
Beautiful blue water that you can see down 20 feet in, porpoise swimming with the boat. Sometimes you can see thresher sharks lounging around as you troll.
Pilot whales surfacing around you, floating sea turtles if you're lucky.
Beautiful sunrise on your way out while you lounge in the cabin. It'll be fun.
I like all the boats above from OI, but want to add 2 more:

I just wanted to thank everyone for their input. We just got back from OBX, sadly the weather was not the best and we have to curb our spending right now due to person events. However we did take a drive to check out the Oregon-Inlet fleet as well as the Pirates Cove fleet. Next year if we make it back out there... I am going fishing!!! This is something my wife and I want to do.
Anyway... this is just a quick note to say thanks again.
Just saw this, but the Country Girl offers offshore wreck fishing. You will catch a string of tilefish and seabass for I think $127 for a full day, or she is available for Gulf Stream as well. Big Al knows whats up, Ive done both and never not come home with a box full.
