Im looking forward to my trip out to Hatteras this year, now were going the last week sept. instead of late oct. Unfortunately were staying in avon so the drive to put in will be pretty far each morning. Hoping the weather will hold. You all have given much appreciated advice on kings and I just purchased FS book on dolphin, (im through chap 7) hoping to get out to some weedlines. But Id love to get into some AJs as well. (not looking for your personal numbers) (unless you want to pm them) but where might I look for some reef donkeys out of Hatteras inlet? Im going to try stocking the livewell with blues before we head out. Ive got some public numbers pre loaded on my garmin. Where might I head hopefully within 20 miles or so? Thanks for any advice.
I'm further south of Hatteras, but if you want to catch AJ's skip the blue fish and cast net some pogies on the beach before you head out or catch some small bottom fish once you get out there. It's easier than trying to catch some blues. AJ's just want something alive, they will hit a dead bait but do much better with live. Good luck and hope you don't get too tired out reeling them in.

Buy a box or 2 of frozen Cigar Minnows, some Hank Brown Hook-up lures, Pirate Plugs ( similar to a Williamson Bait-o-matic, but made locally ) a few Yozuri Deep Divers & troll around structure or artificial reefs looking for bait balls .........
This will get you a few Kings, Dolphins & AJ's ........
Hope this helps ......... ICM

Forget the hassle of messing with catching bait and buy yourself 5 to 10 (cause you will lose some to toothy critters) 150g Williamson butterfly jigs. Jigging rods are ideal but a stout boat rod with a Penn 750 SS spinning reel will do the trick. Hook the jigs up to 30 to 50 lb braid tied to an 60 to 80lb shock leader. Drop that sucker straight down over the reef and jig it up as fast and violantly as you can and hold on cause you will be in a battle that will test everything you got!
The best thing about vertical jigging is you never know what your gonna catch over a reef - reef donkeys, african pomps, cobia, king macks, cudas, wahoo, tuna, sharks etc.

I see those on tackle dir and they come rigged w/only 1 hook. Is that what you use?

yeah man. come to think of it I use a 100g Williamson jig in 80+ ft of water. Pink always seems to do the trick. Most decent tackle shops sell them. if you plan to fish in deeper water (100+ ft) or water with a lot of current you might consider a 150g and up to 200g for even deeper water.
BTW, jacks can be found at most of the deep water reefs (65+ft water). Check out anyone of these ARs out of Hatteras Inlet and you will find fish.
