The Coast Guard is still searching for a fisherman who departed Anchorage Marina yesterday morning enroute Big Rock. His boat was found this morning off the beach at Camp Lejune ..... the motors were will running on his 28' boat. He was fishing alone and fishes regular out of Anchorage. The weather last night was a bit snooty. I didn't get his name but he is 67 years old and from Statesville. His girlfriend called the Coast Guard when he didn't return last night. Not looking good.
Fishing poles were in the rod holders but the lines were cut.

A missing man's boat has been found, but there is no sign of him.
The U.S. Coast Guard has been searching for the overdue boater off the coast of Atlantic Beach.
67-year-old Michael Dodick was supposed to return at 4:00 p.m. Thursday after a day of dolphin fishing some 40 miles off the coast.
His girlfriend told authorities the Statesville man left around 5:30 a.m. in a 28-foot Grady White boat from Anchorage Marina.
The Coast Guard tells WITN News that the boat washed up on the beach at Camp Lejeune this morning, with it's engines running.
There is no sign of Dodick and rescue crews are now searching for him in nearby waters.
The boat, "Slow and Easy" was found with all it's fishing lines broken.
Coast Guard crews had been searching for the boat throughout the night aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Block Island, 47-foot rescue boats from Station Fort Macon, and an HC-130J Hercules airplane and MH-60J Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Elizabeth City.
A Pedro helicopter rescue crew from Cherry Point and military police at Camp Lejeune are also searching.
"Since finding the boat the case has shifted to searching for a person in the water," said Lt. j.g. Scott Hembrook. "The Coast Guard is deploying all available assets and coordinating with the Marines for the search.
WOW, the boat made it back to the beach, I pray the owner is found. Track back on the GPS may help locate him.

I have fished with him before. He is a really great guy. His business card is in my wallet. A friend of mine at Fisherman's Inn hooked me up with him so he wouldn't have to fish by himself. He had an auto pilot on the boat but I don't think it was slaved to the GPS. I sure hope he is alright but it doesn't sound good. Prayers for him and his family.
I just spoke with Billy at Fisherman's Inn. He called the Coast Guard Thursday Night after Mike's Girlfriend came in upset that he hadn't returned. Mike had just traded his older 26' Grady for a 28' SailFish a couple of days before and wanted to get it broken in. Billy didn't have any slips so Mike was docked at Anchorage. Mike came by Thursday A.M to get ice and Billy recommended that he not take the boat out by himself that day. He didn't return Thursday afternoon and his girlfriend stopped by Fisherman's Inn upset and didn't know what to do so Billy made the call to the Coasties.
The last time he and I fished together we spoke about wearing an inflatible life jacket when we fished by ourselves. I hope he had his on.
Be careful and file a floatplan!!!

Reason: new info
Wow, his son and I are the same age and grew up togther in Statesville. Well, we went to kindergarten together before he went to private school. This doesn't sound good.
Yeah, Mike used to do business with us before he sold his operation on Conner St. Damned nice guy. Water's warm, they have his GPS, weather is decent. Maybe we'll get some good news. Hope so.

We all love boating and fishing and sometimes to much that we do it alone I have seen good results and bad from some of the most experienced. As we reflect on our fellow boater/fisherman lets remember his love for the sea and the man he was and the lesson we can learn from 67-year-old Michael Dodick was supposed to return at 4:00 p.m. Thursday after a day of dolphin fishing some 40 miles off the coast. Mr. Dodick MHC

Autotether wireless kill switch is mandatory if you fish alone IMHO. Went out in Long Bay this morning, and it was rough. Never switched from a regular life jacket to an inflatable as is my normal routine. Autotether is always working and the FOB in my pocket when I am alone in the ocean.
The USCG and units from USMC's S&R combed more than 13-thousand square miles. As stated, his 28 footer was found on the beach at Lejeune with the engines running. Lines had appaarently been in the water, but were cut. I didn't know him, but he certainly sounds like he was prepared for most situations. My prayers for all who know him. And, stranger miracles have happened...keep the faith.
I heard the CG notification on the radio about the 28footer that had washed up while I was out Friday. They didn't mention the engines were running. I was hoping it had just gotten loose and floated away from where it was anchored. Sorry to hear.
On a similar note, I also remember hearing a notification going out about a 40ft Grady-White that was late to port from the Gulf Stream. I think that was Wednesday or Thursday too. Anyone hear about that, or know if they made it back?
Did anyone talk to USCG about the track back feature and if it was turned on? You'd assume they checked it, but ya never know. Problem is he could have fallen over at any point during the day. Without a more approximate time overboard, the drift area from the GPS track would be huge.
If fishing alone, an inflatable and attached PLB or Spot would probably save you in this type scenario. Hope he at least had the inflatable PFD on. If he did, the water is warm, so there's still a chance one of us fishermen out there ...
We were fishing out there Saturday on a charter and the captain told everyone to be on the lookout for a man in the water. We saw the search planes. Heard they called off the search, very sad situation. If he is gone I hope he didn't suffer. He was doing something he loved.
