Any of you fellas caught or heard of any Cobias caught yet behind Shackelford or in the hook? I saw Tom's report from Hatteras and assume that the fish should be in our waters down south as well. I thought I might give it a shot Thursday or Friday. Thanks!
Had a big one pick up the bait this weekend and run off about 50 yards before droping it. Started to reel in and he was following it, but every time I dropped it back to him he turned... Estimated at 65-70 lbs... Only had a few hours, so that was the only action...
There are a few around, saw a couple of people that caught them this wknd.If you go down later in the wk. you oughta hit it just about right.I would probably fish the hook, and if you can fish it at night.
wolfpack03, I'll probably be out there Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. I gotta pick my boat up in New Bern and have an 11:00 funeral to attend in Morehead. I am going to try and get on the water by 2:00 or so. I am usually on 16/68 and the boat's the Outrageous (original huh?) if you want to give me a shout. I think I am going to try and catch some Hispanic Mackerals.
I may give you a call on Friday. Hope to see you out there.
What do you guys recommend? I have planned on anchoring over some deeper water that "looks good" and bottom fishing with cut bait (fish finder rig). Does this seem like the right idea. Sounds like to me, you set out your baits and open a book until the fish comes along. Sound right?
I never have done much Cobia fishing but do know they like shade. There have been a bunch caught over the years at the #4 bouy right off the point of the Cape. I even know a local down there that carries a few sheets of thin plywood with him to make his own shade.
I'll be on an old Outrage with a new console rail and dodger. Going to pick it up tomorrow at Custom marine in New Bern.
Custom Marine in New Bern seems to be a good outfit. I will not be in my boat this weekend. I will be fishing a 22' seachaser bayboat. I'll keep a look out for you.
I plan on going to the hook and/or ar315 Friday. Taking the wife so it depends on what time I can drag her out of the bed as to when I'll get there. We will probably put in at Oriental and cruise up Adams Creek. It's about an hour trip to Morehead so I'm hoping to be there around 9:00. Will be on 68. "Hook me Up"
Custom Marine did the console rail and Lee somebody with a canvas shop in Vanceboro did the dodger. I have been dealing with Rhonda Willis who is a dear. I think Don Willis actually did the rail. Just got off the phone with her and am going to try and get there by lunch tomorrow.
I asked her how it looked and she asked if she could put it on their web site so I figure they did a good job.
Funny story: I called 3 other places and won't mention names but none of the guys I talked to had any idea of what I was wanting. I called Rhonda and when I told her what year it was she described the rail to a "T". I e-mailed her pic s of another one and they took it from there. Will post pics when I get back.
Where do you get bait for Cobia fishing? I don't want to try catch hog fish for two hours before going cobia fishing. I assume blues don't work nobody has mentioned using them.
Can I use my tarpon rigs or do you need a smaller hook?
A big fat blue will work. I had a cobia on last saterday on a 2 1/2 lbs blue. He droped it when I tried to set the hook, then followed it almost to the boat, but wouldn't eat it again. A blue on top splashing around would be a great choice of baits. From the piers, they call them bubba baits, because only the big fish will mess with a 2+ lbs blue.
I'll be out fishing around Cape Lookout from Friday-Monday. I plan on trying for cobia probably on friday., and will probably try the weekend or monday some too, depends how crowded it is, not real sure of the game plan yet. I usually stay on 68, and will be on a 20' Key West center console. Give me a shout if you'd like, boat is new so it hasn't gotten a name yet, but if you ask for Bryant I'll answer. I'll be glad to share any info on the fishing.
So how do you guys set up? Do you fish a couple on the bottom and one on top? I was thinking about having two down deep and flat lining a bait behind the stern. Sound like a good idea?
Wolfpack, just fish you a couple on the bottom, and keep something with a hair jig/grub combo that you can cast out if you see any,or while your just waiting, cast it out and work it off the bottom.Blues, crabs, spots, croakers, pinfish or cut bait will work for bait.Hopes this helps you out.
huntforfish,
would you recommend putting a couple on the bottom and maybe a couple on top. Just bought some circle hooks, would these be good for Cobia?
rdsr65, I personally don't fish any rigs on top,and I don't know anybody that does. Not saying it won't work but as I described previously, that's the way I fish for cobia and have had good results.Circle hooks will work, but I usually use 7-8/0 straight shank hooks, and either bend the barb down on one or open up the eye and slide one hook over the other one and make double hook rigs,w/ 80lb leaders.Hope this helps you out.
