I'm going down there this weekend and I will be putting the boat in at the Wrightsville Beach Public Access, but we are thinking about going to see a band on the WaterFront downtown Wilmington and ride the boat over to the river and ride up to where downtown is and dock it up.
Has anybody done that ride before? If you have, how is the ride and how long does it take ??? Also riding back at night you think that would be a problem?
I have done that trip quite a few times. It is approx 11 miles south from WB to snows cut over to the river and about the same back up north to Wilm. It is a great scenic ride but you do have to be careful coming back at night, especially as you approach snows cut. Once you split off of the main shipping channel heading south-east towards the cut, the channel is very narrow and if you venture out of it.. VERY shallow. Even at high tide, there can be places just 10 feet or so outside of the channel that are 1' deep. Grab a chart, take it slow with a spotter with a light, pay attention to which marker you are passing, have a good GPS to refer to and you should be okay. However, best would be to have someone with you who has done that portion of the ride at night before.
The Raleigh area has had flooding rains in the last few days>IE: this means lots of large logs and stumps coming down the river in the next few days!!! Trust me; I fish the Cape Fear a lot you DO NOT want to travel the river at night with the log count high in the river! Most logs I see are over fifth teen feet long and twenty to thirty inch’s thick.
Ya trying to go see Girl Girl Girl? Take a cab, have a good time and go out on the boat on Sat. Too much to worry about on that river at nite. Not for a first timer.

haha
If I was going to see a girl, I think my wife would not be so happy about that.
I think I'm going to wait another trip for that ride, we might even wake up and drive and go get some lunch sunday
LOL. Girl Girl Girl is a big hair 80's cover band that is playing on the waterfront tonite. I thought you were talking about that when you said you are going to listen to the band on the river.
I'm a little late replying as Friday has passed, but there will be many more downtown sundowns through the summer. If you're interested in checking out the band from the boat, I recommend launching from the ramp near the bridge downtown. You will burn no fuel and not have to deal with the river at night. If you're looking to do some exploring, make the trip during the day. You can dock downtown and have a nice lunch with your wife.
