Random Quote: A boat without a ding or four is not being used
After checking coastwx.org for a wave/weather forecast, we left out of Lockwoods Folly at 6:00 am for the Horseshoe. The wavecast was for 2 foot seas, 8 second period. The actual conditions were a little different, more like 4 foot every 5 seconds with an occasional 6 footer. So we changed our plans, fished for a while around the 9 mile rock, trolled to the Hardbottom area. In an hour we had caught a 10 lb dolphin, and lost a nice king at the boat. One of my guests got seasick and asked to go in. Once we got back to the inlet, he was feeling better so we decided to try our luck for spanish. We had a nice spanish on before we got all the lines out, ended up with 29 (1 short of our 3 man limit) most of them 20-24".
Heres our report from the horseshoe.
My original crew wimped out so I gave Hal from THT a call and he met me at the dock at 5:30am and we headed out. It was a little on the ify side first off but we took are time and made it out ok. Started trolling just south of the ruritan and worked our way to the horseshoe we boated 5 dolphin and 2 kings before we headed back and lost 3 others. Thanks for the heads up from Flying Bridge you were right on the money!! Also thanks to Hal (HBLAC)for going on such short notice!!
Heres a few photos. A good break in for this boat. We were running a 5 line spread and the hot two colors were blue and white and blue and silver. Caught one king on a purple and black color all with Balyhoo.

Fished the g'town hole area on friday, kinda sloppy ride out. We caught 4 dolphin, lost a couple more and pulled the hooks on 2 tuna, SLOOOOOOOOOWWW. We should have went south.
I took the family to Okracoke for the weekend, rode up Core/Pamlico Sound from Goose Creek. Ride took a couple of hours but it was beautiful. Spent a few hours jigging speckled trout in Wallace Channel and caught about 20 releasing all but 10. Spent the rest of the day lounging around Okracoke. We had a blast, something to b said about watching an 8 year olds face as they reel in a double hookup of trout.
Left Harkers Island fishing ctr. at 05:30 ,wind a blowin' just like the weather man said it wouldn't be.... Went any way made it out to the 30 fathom break and found a nice temp break and scattered grass . first fish of the day in about 5 min. nice dolphin about 7 or so lbs. went on to catch a total of 6 dolphin 7 to 12 lbs and 1 Hoo' at 31 lbs. My son fought a LARGE Hoo' for almost 20 mins. until he pulled the hook just short of gaff range that was one disappionted 12 yr old, not to mention dear ole' dad. headed back in around 2:30 and it was ALOT nicer coming in than it was going out. "RAINMAKER" Oh and it RAINED on us for a little while too

Nice catch for you and Hal there offshore. I had the pleasure of fishing with Hal at the BJ couple weeks ago. I was just behind you going out of Lockwood Folly by about 30 minutes. You guys had a bumpy ride going to the Horseshoe. Glad it laid down some during the evening to make the trip back in smoother. I had my brother and brother-in-law with me. We had just got the poles out at the 9 mile area when I had an (almost) chummer on board. He offered me 150 bucs to take him back in. I should have took the money but I didn't. When I let both of them out, heck I was there to fish. I headed out to 18 mile rock by myself. I was able to boat 3 dolphin, small 8 to 10 lb range. At one point I had 3 fish on at once, but I couldn't handle all the lines. I was only able to boat one of those. Twice I had a reel scream for about 5 seconds and then quit. I got one hold rod out of the holder, felt the fish on, but then nada. All in all, a good day. The Kodiack Livewell that I just installed worked really good. Only problem was that I couldn't locate any live bait. It was all around the river near the Cape Fear Buoy, but that's a little far to travel from L.F. to get the bait in those conditions. Looking back, I wished I had. I think I would have done much better if I found dem pogies.
Pulled Clark spoons around the Cape on Saturday afternoon. Could have caught all the blue fish one could clean, but that's not what we were after. Caught no Spanish.
Decided to spend the night inside the hook on Satuday. It was a beautiful night. My little boy had a blast. Saw more stars than I ever have. The Milky Way was clearly defined running from Cape Lookout Lighthouse to the shore on the opposite side. Slept lightly because I'm always worried that I'll drag anchor and end up on the beach the next morning. I set my shallow alarm to 18ft and it did go off at 3am, but it was due to a slight shift in the wind direction. Sunrise over the lighthouse the next morning was magnificant. Waters inside the hood were like glass. Of course, this brought out the "no-seeums". We left the hook at 8am. Trolled for a little while. My son reeled in a few blue fish and we decided that 24 hours on the boat was enough. Headed back to 70 West Marina. Great day on the water. I'll post a pic in the photo section.

Went out a little south of the yellofin hole, had a 15lb.bull in the boat within 15 minutes,it got slow for a while after that, until we trolled back up to the 50fathom line boated 5 nice mahi all 20-25 lbs.Lost 2 bigger ones right at the boat, and had about 5 more that wouldn't quite commit.Hooked up on a nice wahoo around 40lbs.but he chewed his way through the mono.Went lookin for something different,so trolled up to SW corner of the rock but nothing else.Did find a nice rip w/weed line at 430 line but nothing.Nice ride back to the dock on the following seas. Also while cleanig the fish, the biggest mahi, had a 18" in. sailfish stuffed in his belly.Great day on the water.
