I have normally fished in the Charleston, SC area and have been out of Oregon inlet several times but always on larger boats. I live in NC and Ive thought about keeping my 235 Kencraft (twin HPDI) at the outer banks for the summer and trying to fish out of OI or out of Hatteras inlet. I would really appreciate some feedback from someone who runs a smaller boat like mine out of those inlets. Im a little intimidated trying to run OI in that size boat.
I've run it at least 60 times in three years. Hatteras and OI are the only places I run my boat. You have twins so you should be more comfortable than me. Send me a PM if you want to talk on the phone sometime.
Got a nicer boat than me, and I run OI all the time. You just have to become a meteorologist. I'm not kidding, either, weather underground and reefcast become your friends when driving a boat through either of these inlets. A lot of us carolina boys are over at diferent websites also.
I have run that inlet numerous times in the same boat as yours, pick your days and your fine.
+100 because it can change at the drop of a dime.

i had a 25ft CC out of OI and we got caught in 8-10 ft sees at the point 35 miles out. Never again. 6 hours to get back. but we made it back...they were calling for 2-4 ft seas

2-4 on what forecast?
What kind of boat?
Just curious, were you looking at NOAA 20 miles off or the Canyons forecast?
Were you the Captain? If so what was the weather forecast?
Tired of this Crap in the Carolina's Forum where you can't fish in anything under 60 foot on a charter boat out of OI or HI in NC posted by guys who have been here less than a year and don't even post up any fishing reports from their small boats.
Gimme a call, I'll charter for you. Gimme a weeks notice and I'll get my Six Pack and put you on some fish, offshore, through the merciless Oregon Inlet in NC. I'll even go buy some rain suits for the crew.
Been to the point once on an Oct trip in our 23'wa. 1'-3' prediction winds 5-10 changing to variable, don't recall the direction, the ride out was nice running 28-31mph. Coming home was all the gas you could feed it. Spent 6 days that week fishing out of OI and picked the best to head offshore. Also had a buddy boat all week!
I've always fished out of Bogue or Beaufort inlets until I got my Mckee in april of last year. Now, I mainly fish out of Oregon Inlet. Yes, OI can get snotty. So can Beaufort and especially Bogue. But as blue and others has said, pick your days. Learn what winds the inlet likes and look at all the forecasts(don't fall in love with just one site) and also learn to figure out the seas forecast for yourself. My suggestion would be to pick some of these guys brains on here that fish OI all the time. For example, We fished OI last year on a 5-6' forecast and ran 35 mph out in those conditions. Of course, the freq was somewhere in the lower teens, but I learned something that day from these same guys that have fished OI a lot(blue and headhunt) It's not that hard although I will say I am still learning every time I go out of there. Here's some of what we've caught on my lil boat out of OI. The fishing is awesome out of there
BlueH2O you are exactly right. I see this Pablor guy on here trying to scare people because of his one bad incident. And like you said no details were given on wind and forecast specifically. I have a sneaking suspiscion that this guys is either a local trying to scare people away or he has some vested interest in the charter boat biz out of OI.

your sneaking suspicion is very wrong. I live in Wake Forest and fish out of OI 20-30 times a year on my own express boat docked at Pirates Cove.
All I said is be careful. forecasts can be wrong. I did have a bad experience and I dont remember the details of the forecast. But the weather we had had nothing to do with the forecast. The inlet was very passable either way, but fishing was impossible on a 25ft CC. It was a very long ride back. Some of my inexperienced crew never went fishing again, that is how bad it got. it was late fall 2 years ago. late fall and early spring fishing out of OI is very different than the summer. You can have whole weeks of double digit wave heights like we had this spring.
Like everyone said, get the forecasts for offshore waters and also out to 20nm. Know your winds, wind direction and wave frequencies. Listen to bouy reports offshore and fish near other boats. And if you see the charter boats not going out, it is for a reason, stay inside the bridge and have a blast fishing inshore. There are some great spots around wanchese.

I believe the comment in your previous post was "Never Again" That's very strong words for someone who fishes 20 to 30 times a year. To just throw a comment up there like that with no explanation misrepresents how good the weather and the fishing can be out of OI. I just don't understand why you couldn't be as helpful in your first post as in your last.
It just bugs me when guys just throw worst case scenarios up without any explanation. If one is educated about how and when to fish then just a little local knowledge is all that is needed from the guys on this website. No need for the gloom and doom of one experience.
Luck of the draw on weather. 1st week of Oct. 08 the bridge was closed for 3 days due to high winds (40+). Budddies on a weeks vacation in Hatteras got beat up with one coming home on Tues. had enough drinking for 3 days and no fishing. The sound was to rough to fish that week. We go down on Sat. and our week was outstanding with only one rough sea day but fishable. Had to come in early that day because of thunderstorms moving in. We had stayed inside of 6-7m and got home to see the house next store hit by lightening. A high winds very active storm but we had watched the weather, had a buddy boat in radio/phone contact fishing inside the sound and came in with time to spare. Our week was great weather fishing out of OI 5 out of 6 days with 22'cc and 2 23'wa, guys never launched a boat the week before.
I have fished out of Oregon Inlet 100's of times and no issues. Check the weather AND THE TIDES. Coming back into the inlet with an out going tide and an easterly wind, the inlet will be very sloppy. Once you are out in the open ocean, it's all the same except around Diamond Shoals.

Thats not true either. The stream can be completely different on a NE wind than the rest of the ocean making it unfishable for a small boat...
